Up for auction

Known the car for many years. Last owner I knew of worked at that auction house... last saw it about 6 years ago in the car park at race retro doing an estimate!!

 

Would cost a LOT more to build

I assume, when the ad states that the car "was subject to an intensive

schedule of improvements by a well-respected marque specialist in

Nottinghamshire" that they are talking about TR Enterprises?

Lovely - the ultimate TR in my eyes..

If it's as good as i remember then yes! But it all depends if there is a buyer for this spec....

Alan, We have invoices regarding this car from 2008 ish.

 

Sherwood Restorations sold the car last if i remember correctly.

It would cost the asking price and more, for sure,

if you set out to prepare a TR4 to the same spec.

 

But - how many of us wish we could get back 75%

of what we had spent on a restoration?

 

Up-side is - if you do it (or have it done) yourself,

you get exactly what you want.

Colour, trim, engine spec, extras, etc etc.

I wish I had the money and the space oh and the time to have that car. Wind up windows and everything ?!?!?

Ill carry on tinkering and actually Racing with my 3a

Historically the renovation of classic and historic cars was done for personal enjoyment, the cars concerned were not regarded as investments so much as driving machines for one's own pleasure and satisfaction . . . . there was no question of expecting to retrieve the restoration cost on resale.

 

The idea that one might restore a car and then resell in due course for something towards the restoration coast, or even show a profit, is a relatively recent phenomenon, from towards the end of the 20th Century.

 

As for this TR4, how many years since it was last driven in anger ? Has it enjoyed a rigorous maintenance schedule ?

 

If a car has been sitting around, or even covering a minimalist mileage for a few years, then it will require recommissioning to at least some degree. That can soon enough ratchet up the total price of the new toy when you think about specialist garage labour @£60+vat/hour, or not far off £600/day.

For sure to build the same car now (not that the chassis number could be found I'm sure) would cost more than the asking price, as would mine I guess too.

 

It's just that if I close my eyes and think of the best looking TR in my mind I see these powder blue rally cars - they're just lovely and if I had the inclination I'd build my own - just like this one..

 

Ideally I'd get a drive in it and trade mine in, but auctions aren't quite that accommodating..

 

May well get registered and go take a punt..

This is the problem with many a tribute car, of whatever marque or model, as opposed to a pukka replica . . . . . once you start introducing modern upgrades the car becomes ineligible for any sort of serious event that requires FIA papers . . . .

 

But then, I'd guess that many of the guys who spend loadsamoney creating these tributes in the first place are never going to tackle anything more strenuous than a 12 car club treasure hunt, so the FIA eligibility aspects are not a matter of concern, which is fair enough in its way.

 

However, I've come across several disgruntled owners who have purchased various and assorted tribute cars at auction, erroneously assuming that the cars were an instant passport to competition . . . . . only to realise in due course that the recommissioning for competition can swallow a few grand in a hurry, and that replacing some of the less original tweaks with FIA compliant components can soak up a few grand more.

 

£10K expenditure on your auction purchase before you can take your new toy out to play can be a bit of a shock !

 

Caveat emptor, do your homework sooner rather than later, and never more so than when considering bidding at auction.

When competing in Europe in 1962/3, the four Works' TR4s had drum rear brakes and the drivers had no need of power assistance, despite the fact that they were tackling numerous mountains in the Alps & Dolomites. Having met most of those drivers and co-drivers over the last 25 years, none struck me as being giants with legs like tree trunks!

FIA is getting more and more strict

but on the other hand a lot of competition doesn't actually require Papers

Things like Hero/Le Jog etc don't need papers - but they do need a very good navigator! and you would be wise to get a full roll cage (not a minor after market addition)

These show cars do look lovely and if money was no object etc etc

But as the Irishman said If I was going there I wouldn't start from here

If you start from "What do you want to do with the car?" rather than "here is a car what would I do with it?" you eventual purchase would be more rational

Pretty sure for hero events the cars need fiva papers? Wouldn’t get away with rear discs at scrutineering.

 

The car up for auction was someone else’s dream tr most likely.

 

Will be interesting to see what it goes for.

 

If you wanted a nicely sorted correctly road rally prepared TR4 I think Steve Blunts TR4 is still up for sale....

I know 415VC & the last owner. A nice car indeed & certainly looked after by that last owner for I think the past couple of years or so.

I would be pleased to see it go for near to that guide price as my own 4 is close to that spec & certainly in the same, if not slightly better, condition overall! My colour is not that lovely Powder Blue though.
