boogie
My 6 has been off the road since 1985 and the modern V5C shows PLG as the tax classification. I've been told previously, once the cars insured and MOTed, I take my V5C in to a post office that still does road tax (yeah, like there's one of them still around!!), tax my car and get the post office to send my V5C to the DVLA amended to show classic vehicle status. Is it possible for me to tax it online and send the V5C off myself?
Pogo
Is it possible for me to tax it online and send the V5C off myself? I doubt it as it will expect it to be paid for as it isn't 'historic' yet (acccrding to the V5C and therefore the DVLA system). When I did my TR2 after it had been off the road since the 1960s I did it through the Post Office as you say, but that was about 3 years ago so it may be different now. Mine was also MOT exempt and that was handled at the same time, although I did get an MOT once it was taxed. Roger
boogie
Thanks Roger. I was wondering if I could pay the tax online then send my V5C off and wait for my refund of the license fee or if I had no choice but go to the post office
john.r.davies
See: https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles/apply-for-vehicle-tax-exemption And last line: "You can still use your vehicle while your application is being processed." If you send all the papers, then you can be deemed to have applied for your licence. IMHO John
boogie
Thanks John. Looks like it can only be done at the Post Office then (I'll try to find one that still does road tax)
barkerwilliams
I bought a car that had been off-road for some time and had passed the “historic” qualifying date when I wanted to tax it. I telephoned Swansea and asked and they looked up the vehicle details and advised me to tax the vehicle in a local Post Office. ( branch finder for your local vehicle type office http://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder). Went in with old style V5 and MoT, they switched to Historic, taxed the vehicle and sent off the paperwork for me. Not one penny changed hands and took about 2 minutes. Easy.
