Ernest
Hi All Haven't driven the 6 much at all since purchase in November but was intending to take it out for a run totday. On trying to start the car, the ignition key only went to the first position where ignition lights come on. So no fuel pump nor starter motor. After a some 'fiddling', and even in deperation trying WD40 on the key!!, I have now found that although key now slides in nice and smoothly (no doubt due to WD40) it won't turn at all. Any advice would be very welcome please. Best Wishes Errnest

The actual ign./ sw. part is on the unit rear end held in by a small set screw on the lock barrel ! You have to be a bit of a contorntionist to work on the rear end. Bruce. Ernest
Thanks for prompt response Bruce. It is a 1972 (CP) car so yes, the ingition is sited just below the steering column When I viewed the car at TR BItz it had a starter button when the rheostat is sited on the dashboard. But I prefered to return to original so asked them to remove the starter refit the rheostat and return ignition to operate from under the steering column Perhaps there was a problem arising from this change. Any further advice would be appreciated please. Ernest

It works wonders on all door locks of any type and window winder handles & cables etc. Bruce.

Nickffc
+1 for Kev... I need to pull he steering wheel with a little left hand down to get my key to turn
Ernest
Kev and Bruce Thanks for responses. Yes I have tried moving the streering wheel both ways and even tried a spare key - haven't tried PTFE but if worth a try I wil go to Halfords next week. Failing this, it seems that the only option left is to replace the ignition/steering lock. I have looked at doing this and I can't even see how I can remove the black plastic 'crash' cover. Any ideas on this? Ernest
stuart
Before you go tearing into anything why dont you give TR Bitz a call and Im sure they would be happy to sort it out for you. Stuart.
Ernest
Hi Stuart Given how helpful TB Bitz were to deal with when I bought the car, I am sure you are right about contacting them. Problem with this being that they are 250 odd miles form me (south London) so about £250 each way to trailer the car back and forth. Would appreciate any advise on removing the lock though, which is looking like my best option. Thanks Ernest

Its about £300 and as they fitted it, it s/b still under warranty if you only got the car in November 17? Bruce.
Ernest
Interesting observation Bruce, thanks - I never thought about a warrant given age of the car. Might be that TR Bitz would supply he part then I can then at least make an attempt to fit it. Bit frustrated at missing today's intend run but there we are! Ernest
Hi Bruce. I live south-east London - Near Biggin Hill. I am going to contact TR Bitz this week to see what Craig might advise. Perhaps if they supply a new ignition/steering lock, and some advice on fitting, I will have a go at this. My default option is to contact Rees Bros, (who actually restored the car to a very good standard back in the 1990s) have the car trailerd to them and let them the new part. So...I do have a plan of sorts Thanks again Ernest
astontr6
Ernest! You may have to speak to John Sykes direct, who is the owner of TR Bitz to sort this out. He did have a big Merc. Sprinter Van which he could get a TR6 into? which he delivered cars in. Good Luck. Bruce.
