smizgals
Hi, Has anybody fitted one of these? I am considering it to protect the alloy sump which is slightly lower at the rear than the standard one and so wonder if it would also fit. I will also contact Moss. Thanks, Stan
pinky
hi Stan, (no reply's nobody knows) I have a alloy sump sticks out at the bottom about half an inch, really could do with protection I believe in the early days there was a factory fit, shouldn't think there was much to them have you any other information pink
Motorsport Mickey
The reason the sump sticks down is to put the cooling fins into the air stream to allow the sump to work, unfortunately that means below the line of the chassis and if you EVER go over a low kerb or even those flattened "pimple islands" that are popular now about 1 1/2 metre dia and the crown about 3" higher than the surrounding road BBbooooooiiiiiiiinnnnkkkkk is the noise it makes as it hits it. Don't even think of driving down roads which have been skimmed with upstanding manhole covers, one day you forget ! The sumps are fragile and there are instances of oil loss because of fracture. If you are putting a skid pan over it (maybe pack down the rear) the finned sump obviously doesn't get cooling air and can't work as designed. When we use them on race cars we shorten the sump depth by about an inch, it welds okkkkiiiiiishhhh not being the nicest material, but you can then leave the bottom open for air to percolate around it. Sometimes useful to consider why you have one fitted, monster engine that needs help to brace the block at the bottom ? OK... Running in the UK ? ...no not really don't even need an oil cooler, South of France or Alpine passes, engine gains good benefit from additional cooling but the oil cooler (with thermostat) does that better than the finned diff. Horses for courses I suppose, the bling factor when passersbye stop to admire the finned sump makes it worth it...Oh..hhmmm.
