crankshaft end float

Recommended Posts

Following on from 'piston broke', a well respected member of our illustrious community has reminded me that I should take the opportunity to check the crank end-float. How on earth do I do this? I spent a very cold and unpleasant hour this morning, groveling around under my car (engine is still in the car), trying to find somewhere for the dti magnetic base to attach to, and then how to reach the fan pulley wheel? Any suggestions? Will I have to remove the radiator? Advices much appreciated. Austin

Simply put the magnet on the link between the front springs.

Put the tip on the pulley where the belt runs.

Put the crank backwards by carefully pushing a screwdriver between

link and pulley. Take care not to destroy rubber or the belt area.

There is not much force required.

Set the dial to Zero and sit inside the car and press the clutch

Step outside and watch the numbers on the dial.
