4A Diff Pin Measurements

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Can someone please tell me the distance between the diff pins on the front chassis bridge ( ie the distance between them across the chassis) - I have a Triumph workshop manual which lists loads of measurements for lots of chassis areas and there is a plan of the area in question, but no measurements!

Any help much appreciated

Cheers

I meant to add that measuring as accurately as I can ( which isn't very!!), I got a measurement of 274mm ( centre to centre )which is a knats whisker under 11 inches - bearing in mind ST were largely imperial, I wonder if it should be 275mm ie 11" exactly

Anybody got a measurement please or can point me in the right direction to find one - I can't believe the workshop manual doesn't have this as it'snot exactly an uncommon issue ( replacing diff pins)

Pete - you are correct and accurate! I was working to the bodgers bible of 25mm to an inch - on one inch, it's probably near enough, but over 11", it's a noticeable difference

Why don´t you measure this yourself on your diff?

What could be more exact?

That's what I've done to get 274mm, but with my limited skills and tools, it's not an easy measurement to take, so I was hoping somebody would have an answer and hence remove any chance of a mismeasurement - if not, then I will have to go with what I have although I may well do a series of measurements and see how different they are!

Guys - thanks for comments

Pete- There is only one front pin on the chassis and the rear pins have different spacings, hence why I'm struggling - as the mounting bracket is not flattish ( its attached to the diff ) it's not easy to accurately trace the spacings and then measure - bearing in mind I thought this was a fairly common occurrence, I wrongly assumed the measurements would be readily available - I still don't understand why the official WM doesn't show these measurements despite having a plan of the arrangement ( in the chassis dimensions section)

Marco - thanks for the offer - I'll but you a pint but it's a long way to go!

Translate the measurement....

Clamp the bushes in the diff mounts

Insert the new diff pins in the bushes - or long suitably sized bolts/studs.

Get the pins/bolts located squarely in the bushes.

Measure pin distance apart.

Pete

Why didn't I think of that! I've got 2 pins and new bushes and washers so everything I need - other priorities for next few days unfortunately so will get onto this soon - in meantime, Marco, you don't need to crawl underneath.

I'll post the dimension on here for future reference

Update

I followed Peter W's suggestion, utilising brand new pins and new polybushes - I did it several times and on all occasions I got a figure between 266 and 267mm - in fact my first measurement looked spot on 266.7mm! So pretty much agree with Marco ( thanks for doing that) - I don't imagine original tolerances were were within 1 mm. ( I wait to be corrected!!)

Shows how far out my original measurement of 274mm was.

Will double check with Colin at CTM on Monday as a matter of interest.

Cheers
