Learned Gentlemen

I am experiencing cold starting problems with my TR4 in a morning. The starter motor is struggling to turn the engine over as if the battery is nearly flat , eventually it gains enough momentum to fire up, if I let the engine run for approx. 30/40 seconds then switch off then switch on again the engine then the fires up immediately and will continue to do so all day even if the car is left several hours to go cold. The battery is less than 12 months old and is showing 12.9 volts across the terminals, the starter motor has been rebuilt and I have removed it to have it checked with no fault found. The solenoid is new and I have cleaned and checked all the electrical terminals including all the earths especially the one between the engine and chassis. Any suggestions as to what the problem is will be much appreciated.

Cheers Chris

You need to measure the voltage across the battery terminals while cranking the engine, if the volts stay above - say- 10 volts then you need to look for bad connections between battery to body, body to chassis, chassis to engine, battery to solenoid, & solenoid to starter motor. You can use a meter to check for volts drop across all these connections, if all are good the it's back to checking out the starter motor.

What is the Cold Cranking Current rating of the battery ? It may be new but if the rating is inadequate ..........

After a few moments of this 'struggling to turn over', feel around the battery cables : battery-solenoid-starter & battery - body - engine : is there anything getting warm? The problem you describe sounds like bad earth/bad connection. any warm point is high resistance & needs a good clean/tighten.
