Veneer 1967 TR4A dashboard

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone - Betty still waiting for her facelift! Time ran on and I didn't want to loose her for the Summer. Am assured she is going in next month.

Have decided that trying to replace veneer myself is perhaps too difficult.

Can anyone recommend where I could get this done in the Essex area?

I will keep existing colour, looks Teak or light Oak in colour but my research online suggests its Walnut grain (not Burr).

As Roger previously suggested, I am going to buy a new dashtop, TRShop looks like the best recommendation.

Any advice much appreciated.

Have a try at re-veneering it yourself !

The self adhesive teak veneer is readily available, i bought mine on ebay and had enough for two dashes, so was able to give the spare part to another TRer.

The ‘difficult’ part is cutting the holes, then colouring the hole edges, i used furniture crayon.

it was really rewarding to do, and if you make a mess then a professional can still take over!

I posted photos on here when i did it in 2013, have a search!

I had my own dash revarnished by a woodworking / furniture restorer. I preferred to keep the original grain which I think could be walnut.

It came out really well. I'm not that keen on some of the reproduction finishes as many appear too heavily grained or dark.

Yes, that's my colour. Thanks for advice Steve. My neighbour did his Sunbeam Alpine dash, made it as well, I will have a re-think about that.

Thanks all for input. Will post a photo when done whichever route I choose.

Hi Everyone - just thought I would show you my re-furbished dashboard. I ended up taking it to a furniture restorer called Mill Race in Chelmsford, he matched the original and patched in the veneer plus several coats of modified shellac based bar-top lacquer.

I am really pleased with the finish as the patina has been retained - not expensive either.

The bonus is he runs training courses for people with health problems to help them get back into the workplace.

Am hoping she will be put back together and back on the road by the end of May.
