Gearbox/Diff rebuild cost?

Recommended Posts

Anybody got a rough idea? Re-using the CW&P in the Diff, new lay shaft, bearings and seals in the gearbox but all gears fine. rebuilding J type overdrive but no parts.

Hi Simon,

If you are going that far with the gear box and lay-shaft. I would have ORS do the Stag conversion on your lay gear to 3 needle roller bearings cost £70> Buy the lay shaft only from them as they make their own. When I did mine last, I was supplied with a soft lay- shaft from a usual suspect and there are 50 odd in the market place, all waiting for the unsuspecting TR buyer? Some have already surfaced and caused their owners a lot of aggro???? If I am read your post correctly you have already replaced the lay shaft? If you did not do the file test on the edge of the shaft it would be very prudent of you to do that as 2 TR owners have informed that they were sold soft lay shafts and one had been fitted by the one and only TR Gearbox Guru!!!

Parts for the diff are around 150-200 GBP plus CWP where needed.

CWP starts around 200 GBP and may cost up to 500 GBP,

Gearbox is much more complicated because there are much more parts

that can wear. Rough figure is 500 GBP if nothing is broken.

Lots of bad parts are on the market, a friend recently got problems with

new brass sync rings that failed after a few thousand miles.

J-OD mostly has rubber rings in wrong size in the service set.

Can be a pain to refurbish if you have to remove gearbox a second time.

ORS charged just over £1000 to rebuild my OD and gearbox including the stag bearing conversion
