Unwanted horn sound when moving steering wheel.

Recommended Posts

1974 TR6. JRW713N

When turning right or leaning downwards on steering wheel the horn sounds.

Car is fitted with Mota Lita steering wheel.

Boss, "pen" and horn push all in good working order.

Horn even sounds when wheel is leant on with horn push and "pen" removed.

Doesn't seem to do it when turning left >:-)

Column bushes ok too.

Any suggestions?

Check the horn push brass tab that contacts the ‘pencil’ is not too long and shorting on the steering wheel boss. You may find filing an eighth of an inch or so will sort it.

Hi John

I have the exact same problem, very embarrassing at times. I have put it down to worn steering bushes but haven’t replaced them yet. Let us know if you find a fix.

When it happened to me, it was a 'big' lump of solder on a poor repair in the wiring inside the column, took a while to find it.

I thought that was an optional extra on the TR6! :D

I find that as long as I make sure that the horn push centre is pushed right in and I don't pull on the steering wheel it doesn't happen.

Good luck with finding a cure.

Cheers

Rog

I have the same thing and was told by my 'guru' that the inner and outer column need to be adjusted relative to each other. I suspect this is what NTC and Roger are also alluding to with their answers.

Thanks Guys, is it just a case of adjusting the inner column length or is both the outer and the inner that need adjustment.

It can also be a chaffed wire which is touching shaft

when shaft turns, it slowly wears thru insulation over the years

ye say

Doesn't seem to do it when turning left

which suggests its earthing thru indicator cancel tab

v v common on Spittys / GTs, { same setup }

Hi, just to add +1 to Roger and ntc's comments. Mine was just the same when I got it. Several embarrassing 'beeps' when not required!!

So yes back along I adjusted the gap, checked the 'pencil' setup and all works perfectly now.

Cheers, James.
