Differential woes resolved!

Hi All.

I have owned my 1971 TR6 for a couple of years now, and have had several 'minor' issues to date.

The most recent being a 'problem' with the differential.

Now I don't mind admitting that as far as being able to diagnose, let alone remedy a fault with a car, is totally beyond my capabilities.

Consequently I have found this forum invaluable to say the least!

My recent woes has demonstrated two things.

1. We live in a throwaway age.

2. There are still some honest & trusting people out there...

Rewind a couple of weeks. I took the car out for a 'spin' and noticed a sound emanating from the rear end of the car, which instantly sounded expensive.

Before taking the car to my local garage, I'd put a post on here seeking advice, which was duly replied to.

One of the very helpful respondents was GT6Markus, who allayed some of my fears, and very kindly offered to check my diff out.

The following day I had the inevitable call from the garage informing me that my diff was f#*$@d! and a reconditioned unit was the cheapest option at £560 + vat.

Sharp intake of breath at this point, as with their labour charges I was looking at the best part of a £1000 to get mobile again!

GT6M to the rescue at this point.

I shipped my diff up to him via courier (£20) and after inspecting it, he discovered there was only 'minimal' damage to my diff, so he promptly swapped it for a reconditioned one he had in stock.

Within a couple of days he sent the replacement out to my garage for fitting, at less than half the price I was quoted by the garage!

Disappointed that my diff was condemned as a throwaway component, but heartened by Marks service, and trusting nature.

He didn't want to accept payment until I had run the car for a month or so, and I almost had to force the issue to pay him!

How good is that?

Diffs can be repared in most cases.

Nearly all suppliers want the old unit on exchange.

 

560+ is quite a sweet price, you can be lucky to find

a clubmate to check the diff before swap.

Normally CWP is broken and that is the end........

1000 Euros are considered a good price here in Germany.

 

One reason for the excessive pricing is the CWP spare part price.

Several suppliers here in Germany charge beyond 500 Euros for those two parts.
