Previous owner stated that it can infrequently work. With ignition on and 4 engaged then the solenoid clicks when switched on. Any ideas? Gearbox oil level? Faulty solenoid? Thanks, James With my A type all the problems have been electrical. Two solenoids should click when the system energizes- a contactor in the passenger side of the engine bay and the main operating solenoid on the passenger side of the gearbox. Austin Branson Posted October 3, 2017 Report Share Posted October 3, 2017 Hello James, it is probably best to start with the simple things. The overdrive is a pretty good indicator of low oil level, so check that first. If that cures it, you then need to investigate where the oil is leaking from. If not, then it's more complicated, but begin with a visual assessment of the clicking solenoid actually moving the actuator rod. Let us know what you find. RogerH Posted October 3, 2017 Report Share Posted October 3, 2017 Hi James, welcome to the forum.  where abouts are you?  as mentioned above - check oil level. may be best to drain and replace with new clean oil. Anything from SAE40 to 80 There are filters on the bottom of the unit - big brass nut. See what you find.  There should be two clicks with the A type OD - the switch relay and the solenoid. If you can hear the solenoid on the OD then the relay is working. It may be as simple as the solenoid not being set correctly. Check this with the alignment arm. This may need a tweek after noprmal setting.  Have you got a manual/book to give you a guide. I am new to triumphs, I also have a 73 Elan Plus2. Looking forward to the TR6 experience.... I am sure I will have many more questions, but the OD would be a nice feature to immediately switch on. I've used them once, unit needed readjusting, very costly at nothing but my time taking the whole car there, no problem since. I'm happy with them. Murty Posted October 6, 2017 Report Share Posted October 6, 2017 I had a similar problem with mine when I bought it when it would only engage when cold. I checked the normal things oil level electrics etc and spoke to a number of people including Overdrive Spares (v helpful) and diagnosis was that the accumulator had worn and wasn't producing enough pressure when the oil was warm and less viscous. Â End result was gearbox out took the box and o/d to Overdrive Spares who fitted exchange rebuilt o/d as can be fiddly to mount to gearbox. When the opened mine the friction material on the clutch had had broken up probably due to trying to engage without sufficient oil pressure and suffering excess wear. So if you want to try and replace accumulator only avoid running with o/d switch engaged but o/d not properly engaged. Â Having working o/d makes the car much more usable especially on longish journeys. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
