First time start following rebuild

Recommended Posts

Well after some 3 and a half years I am now thinking about waking the engine of my 63 TR4 from a 39 year slumber (couple of pics added below). The engine has been rebuilt to standard specification other than unleaded conversion, upgraded crank seal and balancing. I have been researching articles covering pre-flight checklist and the starting/break-in process. I am comfortable that I have a plan, however I am looking for advice on the best way to ensure that I have oil and fuel in all the right places so that it starts as quickly and safely as possible. Can anyone provide me with tips on this two vital areas?

Much appreciated Bob

Hi Bob

I am only down in Westerham. I am free today, why not I come up and we carefully start it up together. Two heads and all that. Give me a buzz if you want. 07785 231635

Cheers

Hi Bob,

assuming you have oiled the crank & cam bearings during assembly, you have oil in the sump and possibly in the filter bowl and you have decent petrol

then remove the spark plugs and spin the engine until you get oil pressure on the gauge - this can take what feels like a few minutes.

Plugs back in and then go through the start up procedure.

Have you got a new cam. If so follow the manufacturers instructions.

Hi Simon, thanks for the reply. There are still a couple of items on my todo list but I will take you up on the offer given you are just around the corner. Cheers Bob

Hi Roger thanks for the advice, the cam is new so I will be careful to follow the suppliers guidance. The bearings all had plenty of attention during assembly so should be OK. I will keep you updated. Thx Bob
