My view is that the rubber coated canvas packings (Kautex) are used to allow for the body to chassis movement to happen without fretting of the body/chassis steel mating surfaces.

 

Then again.....

Insulation of the different materials steel to ally. The rubber/canvas ones dont compress as much as the plain rubber ones BTW which means your body shimming is more accurate.

FWIW I have some nylon spacers same shape as the ally ones, any idea where they came from as I found them at an autojumble years ago?
