TR3A carburetors conversion

Having constant problem with SU carbs in my TR3A I decided to replace the original carburetors for Yamaha R1 motorcycle ones. The only issues to sort out were fabrication of dedicated intake manifold and bracket for bowden throttle cable. The project included also fuel pump replacement for electric one from Yamaha Virago. Then it was just P&P, mixture adjustment for each cylinder separately and…on the road again.

 

Converted TR engine runs much better in terms of starting, throttle response and performance. I haven’t checked the fuel consumption.

 

I know that my conversion could offend originality purists, but IMHO, as long as my TR is not museum artefact, a functionality and performance is more important than originality. TR runs much more better and the conversion is fully reversible.

 

If you looking for alternative for original SUs and Webers and not your favorite option, I highly recommend the conversion I did.

And why not, DIY mods are fun - and involve much more work than meets the eye.

 

But I must say fault finding between 4 carbs seems to me to be adding difficulties.And unlike SUs there are several jets in each carb as well as the needle-jet. Total, at a guess,16 potential faults? But its Japanese it will never go wrong....

Good point. I will install a collision and main "kill" switch in near future.
