Where to fit a Brantz 32+ timer in TR3

Recommended Posts

Has anyone fitted one of these to a TR3? If so where/how? I have a Halda Tripmaster already mounted in the glovebox so that rules that out!

I don't know how you have mounted the Halda in the glove box, but this is what I have done to mount a Brantz Pro 2 and a BigDigit timer.

I took off the glove box door and hinge and monted an aluminium plate using right angled brackets into existing holes.

I mounted it to the left which allows access to the glove box where there are two cigarette lighter sockets and the wires ready to connect a Tripy or similar.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Iain

I am awaiting delivery of the Brantz timer (and cogs for the Halda to convert to Km from miles) from Don Barrow so I will assess the positioning when I see it! The Halda is mounted on a bracket inside the glovebox which is neat (and allows you to use the glovebox for stowing stuff.) I think the PO used a Brantz as there is a mysterious bit of timber in the glovebox compartment that look as though it might have been used to mount something........

The glovebox lid will have to be down anyway to see the Halda so I might just unscrew it and do as TwinCam John has done (or something similar but knowing me less neat!!)

Once installed I shall reveal the outcome on here.......

Well I worked something out utilising the bracket that the PO had made up for mounting the Halda. I used a piece of heavy duty sheet metal (well actually it was a piece of my sister-in-law's Aga shelf that was skulking about in the garage as I thought it was too useful to bin - she no longer has an Aga ^_^ ). It had a neat 90 degree fold in it which means that it is not too wobbly. In fact it's rock solid!

I'm rather pleased with the result as you can still shut the glove box when its not in use and there is still space to put stuff in the glove box. I just need some self-adhesive velcro pads to fix it to the new bracket.

Chuffed! :)

That's a good point Tim. This will be our first competitive rally so I guess we will find out!

If it does then there are just 4 screws to remove the lid.

I was more concerned with not having an "excrescence" stuck to the dashboard TBH.

This may be our first and last rally ????. I didnt want to make to permanent a modification or damage the dashboard surface. So far the navigator has been complimentary but she may change her mind when we attempt to use it in anger ????

All fair points, Ben - especially in carving up the car for something that you don't know you really want to do a lot of. Otherwise, anything that helps the navigator to be organised and know where to find something in a hurry (reset buttons on clock/trip; pencils/erasers/sharpener; the last/next map needed; etc.) is good.

Lots of experience on here, so if you need any input...

Good luck in the event.

@ Ben

Make a test drive before the rally with navigator and a map/cardboard size A4. see what happens.

I think it is better to remove the glove box lid ( it is safer for the navigator if you hit something in front of you).

take a sheet of canvas put some velcron on it and lay that on top of the dashboard.

Hi Kevin

Very well. The position inside the glove-box still allowed room to stow "stuff" around the side and rear of the mounting and whilst much of the driving was in bright sunlight it was shade from the sun so the navigator could always see it.

We did leave the glove-box lid attached despite the safety concerns expressed above but it did mean we could keep it original use to some extent. I think it was PhilB on here who mentioned to me that you can get detachable hinges which would be the answer, rather than having to unscrew the existing one. The glove-box lid did make a handy desk & pen holder.

Kevin/Ben

They're lift off hinges, used on instrument cases. I think you can get cranked ones as well that might work better?
