Health and safety going mad again. AAAAGGGGGHHHHH

Recommended Posts

I have just contacted my local classic friendly garage that do the MOT for me and do few jobs.

So I asked if they would fit new track rod ends , and replace the bushes and brackets on the anti roll bar.

Yes jobs I can do, but as they can re track the car I thought I may as well get them to do it as the car was in for the MOT, and this also pushes a few coffers their way.

So being thoughtful I ordered the parts as to save them time in sourcing them.

But I have been told that they are no longer allowed to fit parts not purchased by themselves its to do with their third party insurance.

Ho Hum :angry::(

I had this with my local independent Landrover dealer, their claim to fame is "you only pay 50% of main dealer prices' but the issue I had with them was they wanted me to pay 300% markup on the price I could by the parts myself from James Craddock, and they were OEM parts. So relented as only other option was DIY only to find they had used ( all be it totally satisfactory) pattern parts :angry:

All to do with control, who's to know whereabouts in the world any parts are bought from ?

When applied to aftermarket parts supplied to newer cars who have been built within the " whole vehicle type approval process" which new vehicle manufacturers HAVE to comply with, the parts suppliers of aftermarket parts discs, disc pads, tow bars bearings etc etc HAVE to pick up the liability if their supplied part causes an accident. Health and safety gone mad eh ?

Then you consider everyday events which change people's lives every day, you know the sort of thing, your non identified disc pad adhesive backing shears causing your car to lock up a front wheel skid off the road travel down a train embankment jump the train lines and land across them. That was lucky you think as you scramble out and turn to look at the damage which is when the East Coast line intercity with 8 coaches arrives on the scene hits the car and derails with 3 coaches jumping the tracks, then in a mind blowing warp of fate it strikes an oncoming Freight train also derailing that and causing multiple fatalities.

Unlikely ? Utter tosh ?...it's happened, admittedly it was a non mechanical fault which caused the incident (driver fell asleep) * but if any aftermarket part is fitted it has to have a system of licensing which pins down the people who supply it and their insurance to cover such events. So any insurer trying to supply a reasonably priced policy has to contain the possible risks, and that means controlling the parts supply to the garage to identified suppliers they can come back on. Health and safety gets a bad press ( sometimes deservedly) but you can see where the reasoning comes into affect.

*Insurers paid out over £22 million for this incident

This is why you should declare everything that an insurance company may decide is not to their liking on car modifications, losing your TR is likely to be the least of your worries if this happens, and as shown above...it does.
