TR6 Hartop transport

Recommended Posts

Hi, I need to pick up my newly purchased TR6 factory hardtop. Can't use the TR as its off the road with some injection problems - waiting for parts.

I will probably rent a van as I don't think it will fit in my estate car, but was wondering if anyone has successfully transported one of these on a set of roof rails.

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris

No idea about roof rails, sorry.

Something I do know, is when I collected mine, I enlisted the help of a mate with a Toyota Hiace van, 'small transit size'.

Fully carpeted in the back, so good for the hardtop base, BUT, it only just fitted between the wheel arches!!!

If you are hiring/borrowing a van, check the internal sizes!

From memory, you need something over 48" wide x 55" long floor space to place the top as it would sit on the car.

Hi John,

Yes I looked at the smaller vans and am not sure that it would fit in one of those. I certainly don't want to drive 200 miles to pick it up and then find it doesn't fit.

I also know (oh, what falls out when you rack your brains!!) that one will fit in the back of a '1st generation' Renault Espace people carrier, with the seats folded flat.

Take plenty of old duvets/cushions etc!!

I did it , no issue, for an HT of a Stag and then of a TR6)w/ standard set of roof rails w/ extra battens wood

Thanks for all your suggestions and offers of help. I will use my roof bars and as Marc suggests take along some extra wooden battens. I have successfully transported a GT6 chassis on an estate car with roof rails and collected a GT6 bonnet on the roof of my car.

Thanks

Chris

I had a similar dilemma when collecting a hardtop for my TR3. It fitted easily in the back of a Kia Sorento - with the back seats flat. It fitted best sideways which means that the issue of rear wheel arches was negated to a large extent. It was cushioned with an old duvet and some cushions (sofa parasites!). I did go equipped for putting it on the roof (on roof rails) but I was glad that I didn't have to as I was concerned that it would cause considerable wind resistance and possibly blow the back window out of the H/top.

Chris

I have trasported a TR6 hardtop on the roof an estate car. I made a U shaped jig out of decking timber which I tied to the roof bars. The grooves in the timber were useful for stoping the top sliding around.

Loaded on right way up. Front tied down to front roof bar. B posts engaged on grooves in wood. Rope through the black metal brackets through which bolts fix top to car B posts. Looked like a wierd spoiler when I'd finished but worked just fine.

Hi Guys,

Talking hardtops, I have recently restored one for my car. However having purchased new chrome trim including a pair of FINISHERS, rear corner RH and LH, I have found that these seem to be about a 1/4 inch short on the inside leg which makes the rear trim stand proud of the rear rail and not fit into the the corner clip.

II did see another hardtop, clearly refurbished, which seem to have the same problem. Also what seem to be an original hardtop that seem to have a original finishers that allowed the rear rail to sit flush.

I know we are lucky that these items are being made, but has any body else had the same problem with these repro fittings?

Cheers

Rich

Thanks for the advice. Picked up my hardtop for the Altringham area and brought it back to south bucks on my roof rails without an issue. Quite pleased with my purchase as it has all the chrome parts, most of the fittings other than a couple of the domed headed bolts and only a small amount of surface rust where it has never been painted.

I had a look at the rear finishers which I suspect are original on this roof and one sits fairly well allowing the rear chrome trim to fit flush but the other is as rich has seen and seems a bit short making it hard to get the chrome strip under the rear window to fit flush. I think it could be made to fit better with some careful fettling.
