Basic knowledge when running a sidescreen

Have you tried engaging 2nd gear while stopped, then quickly move into 1st ?

This stops the gears spinning prior to 1st being engaged.

Same trick with reverse - pop it into top, then quickly to reverse & should go in smoothly.

 

It does sound as if your clutch may be dragging a bit.

Thanks for the advice! I am taking a drive tomorrow again and will try it.

 

I found the leak. The seal between the water pump housing and engine seems to be leaking when the engine is hot and running.

Not a huge amount at one time, but constant.

Easy enough fix I think. Just need a gasket.

If you use a liquid gasket as well as the regular one it will help overcome and irregularities in the casting.

Great advice. That did the trick! The 2nd to 1st shift is super smooth.

I wasn't aware that one could use the 2 together effectively. I will certainly do so.

Water related engine problems is my biggest fear usually.

I assume its only the gasket and not something else forcing the water out, which I will only know once I have stripped that part.

Now you have mastered that, you can move on to stage two - which is:

Instead of fully engaging 2nd gear, just pull the gear lever towards it enough for the synchro to grab, then direct into 1st.

Ditto with 4th to reverse. Works just as well
