O/drive wire gauge

Recommended Posts

How I am learning by my mistakes!! While fixing the Speedo cable I foolishly allowed the overdrive cable to droop and on first trip out the wire melted on the hot exhaust. I think I can splice in wire to fix it, but what gauge should it be? Also to check that it is correct to be on an 8amp fuse?

The A type OD has a twin coil solenoid.

One pulls in powerfully and takes a good few amps buit only for a second.

The second coil holds it all together and takes about an amp.

However the 8amp fuse may be a little low - go for 10 - 15amp.

The cable is not usually a problem.

This would be fine http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/973/16-5-amp-1mm-sq-32-0-20

or the next size down at 11amps.

Thanks Roger.

The Fuel & Temp gauges are on the same fuse (not sure if that is correct), so assume a slightly increased capacity fuse would be ok?

Surely the fuse is in the switch control side of the electrical circuit that works the relay not in the solenoid power circuit, so is low power consumption - The solenoid operation power, that comes off the 'hot' side of the wires on rear of the ammeter, through the relay contacts and on to the solenoid. (on a TR2/3 at least)

Thanks Roger. Seems I need to do a bit of work to sort out. The wiring diagram will help.

Had other things on my mind to get MOT today (passed). Thanks also to Peter. All sorted and understood now.

Great Forum.
