Wanted. New 4.5J x 15" steel or alloy wheels

Did the TR Register sprint in my TR4 at Goodwood on Easter Saturday. 30 years since I last competed (in the same car - also at Goodwood). Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great bunch of fellow competitors.

 

I am running on 5.5J wheels (original Minilites) which is the only reason I am in the Tuned Roadgoing class which allows for a far greater degree of modification than my car has.

 

A set of 4.5J wheels would allow me to compete against similar cars in the Roadsports class . I want steel or alloy wheels but don't want to use old/fatigued ones. Don't want to use wires unless absolutely necessary.

 

None of the usual suppliers list them anymore. Weller wheels make specials for about £350 each!

 

Anybody got any ideas.

Hi John,

 

there are no sources of new production 15" x 4.5" steel rims that I'm aware of. Special order only, as you've discovered !

 

The majority of TR steel rims were in any case 15" x 4", not 4.5" . . . . . and by now they're all too often warped.

 

So you're looking for something about as common as virgins in a knocking shop, and about as costly.

 

No virgins here, but I may still have some lightly used and not abused goers, nudge nudge wink wink . . . . . drop me a line if relevant !

Many thanks MJD. This is exactly the kind of information I am looking for.

 

I have made contact with the company who are in Dunstable, which is only 5 miles from me. They don't list one for the TR but I have given them the PDC and offset dimensions and they are contacting their suppliers to see if anything might fit. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately they have no wheels with the 4.5 inch PCD needed for a TR

 

Think we need a drivers meeting on this! to run in unmodified I can get compliant sized 13" rims for the Vitesse but finding 13" tyres in list 1A that have any more grip than ball bearings is nigh on impossible, but a TR can have lever arms converted to telescopic and still run in unmodified?

 

As the ethos of unmodified is "Where relatively minor performance modifications have been made" note not "None" I think it a moot point if you are running on 5 or 5.5" rims, or if I'm using 15" instead of 13" rims, or someone has converted from Lever Arm to Telescopic suspension. OK add a bunch of them in and you go modified, but I think we need a few better rules on what "relatively minor performance modifications" are?

I agree with what you say Alan, especially about the anomalies in regulations, but I can easily see a can of worms being opened here. It could get mighty complicated for decisions to be made about what modifications are allowed within the 'standard' ethos. I would hate to be in the shoes of those making the decisions. It would bound to cause resentment.

 

I would guess more TRs are running around on 5.5J wheels than those on standard, old, steel wheels. Definitely a case for the Register to look into reproducing an item so pivotal to originality and safety. Until then I think my relatively standard car on non-original wheels will be mixing it with much more serious competition.

You would likely struggle to find a 4.5j 15 with the correct stud pattern, but Citroen c1, Peugeot 107/8 and Aygo come with 4.5jx15 et35 steels and alloys they are 4x100 though.

 

I am looking at a set along with 165/45-15 tyres to fit on a reliant, very slightly larger rolling radius than the 145/70-12 but allows for fitting discs.
