AarhusTr6
Hi, yes, I know the term fag has a differing meaning for our friends over the pond! Anyway . . TR6 inbound from US - -3 weeks to go! So me being a electronics nerd, was curious if the TR6 has a cigarette lighter in it and if so where? Also, with this world of GPS and all the other cumudgins we plug in now, how to most manage all of this in an old car? Just courious
RogerH
Hi I use a three way ciggy socket hard wired with a fuse. Positioning the socket is difficult as it needs to be handy but not in the way. On my 4A I have it attached to the left side of the 'H' dash support. Roger
AarhusTr6
Yes, seems in early models it was not standard and many dealers fitted them if asked . . but guess back then we all carried matches and zippo! So H frame I think is the place - - guess I need to be patient and see it
foster461
The TR6 never had a lighter but it did have an ash tray. There is a lot of real estate on the H frame to fit one and if you buy/make a center arm rest you can put a couple in there also. Since many people dont use the ash tray they put the outlet in the ash tray which is very convenient for dash or windshield mounted GPS/Phone nav. Dont forget to include fuses. AarhusTr6
Hi Stan Yes, plan on using in-line fuses if I have to fit one!
Blue cedar
Ditch the fags, then you don't have to fit a lighter and can spend your fag money on petrol. Surely, a 6 on cam gives a better fix ?
OAF939M
I have also been wondering about this, stopped using fags years ago , but do want an aux outlet for GPS etc. If used direct to battery via fuse could also be used for trickle charging when car is in garage. barkerwilliams
My car has a cigarette lighter on the RH front of the H piece, however my knee catches any power adapter plugged in so I fitted a hard wired USB twin socket http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Dual-USB-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Charger-Power-Adapter-60cm-Cable-Fuse-/152147055404?hash=item236cabd32c:g:n58AAOSwU-pXsrXy into the passenger side speaker side panel, connected to the rear of the cigarette socket. Now the TomTom is no problem and the power cable does not cause any issues. As the socket converts 12v to 5v it should not be connected to an always-live power source as it would flatten the battery eventually, so need to be on an ignition switched circuit. Terry Field
On mine, the panel light rheostat has been replaced with a fag lighter, which is where the trickle charger plugs in now, plus any other gizmos needing power Terry
DRD
On mine, the panel light rheostat has been replaced with a fag lighter, which is where the trickle charger plugs in now, plus any other gizmos needing power Terry I did the same and removed the dimmer switch and fitted a lighter socket and installed extra wires from the fuse box; works great! I have a voltage meter on the left and a x2 USB charger on the right. There wasn't any room for the cigar lighter so I made a bracket and screwed it to the underside of the metal inner dash. I used a fused line from the radio lucar connector on the ignition/ starter switch and piggy backed the cigar lighter with a fused connection to the white cable on the ignition/starter switch. I use the cigar lighter for a solar trickle charger. The USB for the Satnav and phone Kind Regards, Dave in Sunny Spain
matttnz
Or... most modern radios have a USB for connecting to iphone etc that will also charge. Might as well use it for the satnav too.
AarhusTr6
Hi Being an ex electrons apprentice I plan to go direct to battery and fuse it. Like idea of putting on H frame too. My main weapon of choice is an iPhone6 for both nav etc and will be the main power demand (less for beer chiller behind seat ;-))
Cew
There are two redundant holes either side of the H frame behind the vinyl. I opened these up to accept 12v sockets, with covers, to power accessories like phone, dashcam and satnav. They are not cigarette lighters but are the same size so accept any plug that fits said lighter.
KiwiTR6
I've used one of those sockets on my car to connect my battery trickle charger. So far I've managed to back out of the shed twice with it still connected but luckily the plug just pulled straight out. I now have a little card reminder sign that sits on the steering wheel spoke I might have to fit another under the dash somewhere - I don't think I could bring myself to drill a hole anywhere clearly visible...
