TR4 Steering Column

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am about to replace the 2 large flexible rubber steering column joints on my car, having disassembled it all. I wonder if the splines on the metal couplings either side of the joints should be greased or not. If so does it matter what type.

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

a smear of any grease will do. Copperslip works well.

Before you fit them have a look at how the clamp bolt fits and its effect.

You will/may notice that between the clamping faces there remains a small area of solid metal that keeps things apart and reduces the clamping effect.

See the attached pic. It is possible to machine the extra area of metal away thus making the clamp work as it should have done.

Some people use a hacksaw to do this.

I changed both squidgy couplings to TR6 type many years ago. I believe (from what I have read on the Forum) that there is a universal joint from Ford which fits the TR column.
