Hello folks, as a new member I'm filling in the car information questionnaire that was sent in the welcome pack. I can find the Chassis and Engine numbers, but there are 3 plates rivetted to the bulkhead which have me puzzled. 2 brass ones are on the vertical section to the right of the brake m/cyl embossed 841011, the one below this is embossed EB8459. The third plate, which is ally, and on the horizontal part of the bulkhead, is stamped 37120 CT. None of these numbers appear to relate to engine or chassis numbers. Can anyone enlighten me? Ta very much, Mike.

I think that The ally one is the body number. There is a lot on the forum on these plates. I dont jave mine but have seen on Conrads two TR5s.

Pass on the others. Snowy

This make me think about a TR3A, bought in bits years ago in UK : whilst checking which parts were missing or not (several years after purchase...), I realised that, on the firewall, a TR3A new chassis plate was riveted, one inch from a new TR4A IRS chassis plate  !

Both old, originals chassis plates were in the parts box, as were the brass ones.

This TR3A is gone to a good home, but I still have the pair of TR4 A IRS (new and old, original one) chassis plates : as I didn't kept any trace of the old documents, and as I can't remember from whom I've bought this car, I don't know who's the owner of these plates !

Hi Mike,

your 'chassis' number does not end in a zero '0' it should be the letter O as in overdrive. And there should be a spacew between it and the preceeding numbers.

That number is on the large rectangular plate near the windscreen wiper motor and will be in the log book

37120 CT. is on a thin Ali plate near the brake/clutch MC's and is the chassis bodyshell number.

There should be no brass tags/labels (I think).

Richard, the questionnaire asked for info about me and details of the car.....chassis, engine, g'box numbers, colour etc. It is to enable the Club to update records.

Roger, sorry, senoior moment typo, "0" is indeed an "O". Further to my original posting, I've just discovered yet another brass plate, rivetted just above the Commision plate. This one states EB7924, so different to the one on the RH side of bulkhead!..Could they have been a dealers or a restorers plate? Thanks AlanR, that's really wierd. Why would anyone want to fit them to a TR4? I think I'd better get a Heritage certificate very soon, as on further investigation, the Commision plate states that the car was originally Wedgewood blue/ blue trim, not red/black as it is now. I know it's not unusual to change colours, I've done it myself. However, I can find no evidence of blue paint anywhere, so I must assume that it must have had a body-off respray/resto some years ago. I'm currently awaiting a list of previous owners from the DVLA, so will be contacting as many of them as possible to hopefully get to the bottom of this conundrum. Mike.

Probably came from a serial buyer of TR`s the brass plates are definitely late 2 early 3 and as I have come across this before he may well have been a bit free with his ID plate on this car, FWIW whats the engine number?

Mike,

Mike E will know well enough that the numbers on the

brass plates (well, any brass plates) do NOT belong

on ANY TR4.

There is no 'conundrum'.

Hence his question.

The 37120 CT is a bodyshell number, NOT the chassis

number. There were not the same but in a recognisable

relationship - which youyrs is compared with the "chassis"

number of CT36765 O

(and as said above, the last figure is an "O" for overdrive).

Just to add - those brass plates definitely appear to be original

factory stampings)

Stuart, engine number is CT8729E. Mike.

Definitely a bit of a mix and match then as that engine comes from a 62 car.

Stuart, I appreciate that it's a been long time since your last post re my engine numbers, but it was only today (after chasing them up) that I received the details of past owners, with copies of the original Registration docs., that I had requested from the DVLA back in March. Interestingly, the engine and body numbers that I quoted in my earlier posts are exactly the same on the copy of the original 1964 Registration Cert. as furnished by the DVLA. This obviously doesn't tally with what you told me re the engine being from 1962. I'm not casting doubts upon your knowledge, just intrigued. Perhaps Triumph had some older engines lying around that they decided to use up before the 4A ? Anyone else got any suggestions? I'm not unduly concerned, just interested to find out the story. Cheers for now, Mike.

Its possible as Triumph would do pretty much anything to get another car out the door!
