Backlight Fitting Method

Recommended Posts

Afternoon All

I'm about to fit the glass to the backlight with new rubber/original glass. Is the WM method of assembling glass to rubber and then chrome trim the best method before pulling it in with string from the inside? I've had the rubber on the frame for a couple of days and fits fine.

Any help appreciated

Regards

I fit the trim after but its up to you, I considered it likely to distort the trim with all the pulling/pushing/shoving it takes to get them in!

Thanks Stuart

I fitted the trim after as you said and it went in quite easily, apart from the fact it comes as a roll so is reluctant to follow the line if the rubber. The angles are quite acute on the glass which has left a couple of ripples in the rubber where it's had to bend sharply, so I'm hoping it will settle in, and a few warm days might help, if we get any that is.

I have another question regarding the front mounting studs for the backlight. The stud/hole didn't line up so I drilled the thread out to fit a bolt only to find the captive plate for the hood mount bolts makes it difficult to get a bolt thought the hole or a nut on it. Is this a known issue and any ideas to get round it?

I suspect your forward deck extensions have possibly been replaced at sometime or other and the captive hole not replaced correctly. Your best bet now would be to fit a rivnut into the hole and then mount a stud in it. Thats how they were fixed originally . You wouldnt be able to fix with a nut and bolt as the quarter panel trim has to go on before fixing the frame down anyway never mind the fact that the captive plate is in the way. BTW dont forget to fit a set screw into the hood fixing plates on each side or else they will rattle forever more and drive you nuts!

Hi Stuart

Yes you're correct both forward extensions and rear deck were replaced some 25 odd years ago. Early days for C & B repros maybe so holes possibly not drilled in correct positions, and the folds on the flanges I remember were not that great. As it was I had to redrill the holes in the hood frame slightly to suit the centre fixing across the rear deck, but obviously the backlight studs/holes positions are less flexible. If I built it again I think I'd use a backlight as a template.

Thanks for the suggestion and rivnuts are the way to go by the looks of things as their only purpose is to provide a fixing and not visible with either the hood or backlight in place.

Regards

Kevin
