You can do that, just rotate the chrome bezel till the tangs line up with the slots in the case, it will then come off, and the glass will be free.

Be careful not to disturb the dial face as it will also try to come out, & if it does it will bend the needle.

...and the currently fitted fuel gauge looks like this ?

In which case it will be a simple task as described in previous posts.

qim -

If you have a 'full face' gauge ( as shown in Peter W's post above)

fitted with a flat glass, then someone has fitted a non-original flat

glass.

If your gauge has the top part 'shrouded' - then it's a gauge from

a TR4 later than about CT 18,000.

The curved glass will still fit.

The top of the gauge is not shrouded.

My added problem now is that I sent the repairers an original Yeager instrument and they sent me back what appears to be some sort of replica (the face anyway)! Even after I told him repeatedly that I wanted my gauge back!

But unfortunately, if this is the case, the original sender and this

(later) gauge will not work together properly, possibly not at all.

David,

I'm not sure exactly what happens if you put a TR4

full-face gauge in a TR2/3.

Visually, they look the same but the TR4 gauge was

designed to work with a voltage stabiliser that the

earlier models did not have.

Nor me Alan.

Sidescreen and later gauges and senders work in a completely different way to each other.

I suspect that there would need to be a 'correct pair' to have anything that works.

Early TR4 gauges look similar to sidescreen gauges but the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge are in fact completely different. I think the ammeter and oil pressure gauge have different part numbers from sidescreen gauges, but they are broadly the same.

Hello All,

After several house moves I discovered that the box with my TR instruments in had been dropped and domed glass on the speedo and a couple of the smaller instruments had broken. I looked at the prices for replacements and was horrified. I think £20+ for the larger instruments and £10+ for the smaller ones is the average sort of price.

“But it’s only a bit of glass” I thought.

A search of suppliers of clock parts came up with this:

https://www.cousinsuk.com/category/mineral-glass-rough-edge-convex-clock-glasses

I have not tried them (Years away from needing to…), but I see no reason why they would not fit.

Of course, because they don’t use words like “Triumph/Austin Healey/Jaguar” the prices are about 1/3 of what classic car dealers charge.

Maybe worth a look if you want to save a few bob.
