TR4a Door Glass no Backlight Questions

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon

Hope you're all keeping well, and good to see TR weather is on its way!

( seems like good old predictatext has changed a word in my title, should read 'and' !)

I have an issue on the door glasses on my 4a, that when fully raised the gap between front frame and glass narrows at the top. Since fitting the Surrey backlight I've noticed this corresponds to an opening of the gap at the upper side of the backlight. Does anyone know if the TR4a glass differs from other models? The glasses fitted btw were originally supplied by Cox & Buckles around 20 years ago, so they could've been a poor repro?

Secondly, the seal which runs between the rear deck and backlight does not grip very well when pushed into place as the channel section is not that deep. Is it recommended to glue this in place?

Regards

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

twenty years ago there were no 4/4A door glass available and people used TR5/6 glass without realising that it is a different shape.

They are now available apprx £50.

The angle of the bottom edge if the glass is different, as is the regulator between the two.

You could either buy new glass and that will eae your problem or do as they did in the 90's be inventive.

What I dd was to partially cut and bend the front arm of the regulator to raise the front of the glass and pull the top rearwards. This is on the Technicalities disc.

This will improve the gap with the surrey frame side vertical.

There is also very limited adjustment on the regulator where it attached at its centre pivot. This is an elongated slot. Move to a new position and see what happens.

Thanks Roger & Stuart for the replies.

The regulators are in excellent condition and one of them I bought at Beaulieu last year for the drivers side was in perfect condition (prob LHD!), so I'll most likely go for new glasses.

To be honest the edging of the repros is unevenly cut, and as you say Roger, if the 4a glass was not available then, it's likely I have the wrong ones.

My only other outstanding question is regarding the seal between deck and backlight. Is it best to glue it in position to fit (seems to fall of easily otherwise as channel is very shallow?)

Thanks Guys

Thanks Roger

The one I have has is a kind of 'H' section, but the lower legs are wider apart than the top which is more like a groove.

I ended up pushing the lower part in with an AA card as I tightened it and it's worked, ( I just knew that expensive AA card would come in handy one day!). Do you still run your backlight btw or have you changed to a hood? Which do you think is the better option?

Hi Kevin,

I haven't looked at my seal for 19 years or so but the 'H' shape rings a bell.

My first seal was so hard I couldn't get the inner eg tucked under.

I do have my surrey top fitted and find it excellent.

My TR4 is a convertible and can;t wait to try it out - this summer I hope.

That's the only one that will post here, even reducing the others in size via FB they are too big a file.

Thanks Suzanne it looks a first class job judging by this pic.

Is it going to the international this year?

I had great problems posting rebuild progress pics on another forum for my Morris Minor van rebuild, which is even worse than the TR forum. In the end I created an account on Imgur which allows free unlimited high quality pictures and then pasted a link to it on my message on the forum. Roger's made a lovely job of it, and look forward to seeing it perhaps at the IWE ? They should make a particular feature of recent rebuilds at the show ( not sure maybe they already do!)

Kind regards

Kevin

Thanks Kevin

I'm sure Roger will see this later when he emerges from underneath the white TR4A.

I doubt very much that we will show our faces at this years international. After 25+ years of attending the event, a change is as good as a rest.

Hi Kevin,

I've got a lot of pics of bits of the car but very few of the whole car. Sue's pic is as good as it gets at the mo.

Pete Fenlon keeps asking for pics but I just don;t seem to get round to it.

When I get it out of hibernation I will try to get that sorted.

As for the IWE I'm not really the flavour of the month at the moment so I'm keeping my head down.

Roger
