New eletrical components

Recommended Posts

Hi

thanks for information on the blue-white headlight wiring issue I previously posted .

Here is some information to limit frustrations from my saga of rejuvenating electrics rear of the dash board & steering column involving Moss components.

Indicator switch part 158966

diligently refitted new switch via steering column and all the stuff involved with that ....unfortunately the component and the batch it has come form has the red - green and white- green wired the wrong way round so indicators work wrong way round. Whilst this is easily corrected Moss were unable to replace this item with a correctly wired version.

haven't driven car yet but initial trails in the garage suggest the self cancelling operation is not working consistently either - not sure this component is worthy of been on my car so may have to source a good second hand original

Advice don't throw your old switch away and check the wiring on any recently purchase replacement the red - green wire should be upper most when switch is in its location on the car

Column Light switch

chose to replace this too -- I am not able to get the headlight flasher to return properly suspect the spring is not strong enough to return. some lubrication may help but hope is dwindling!

Dip Switch

The replacement switch feels very flimsy and I am not sure it has survived my first operation via foot - need to revisit this when I have sorted out other wiring issues to determine if this still functional!

also this is supplied with hex head bolts which are impossible to use to fit the switch . If like me you have slung the old screws you are left with the task of cutting a slot in the bolt head or finding the correct screws ...another frustrating delay.

Ok so thanks for listening but it is some time since I have had the pleasure of working on my TR and these jobs should in my view have been straightforward. So have I just been unlucky with the components supplied by Moss or is this quality to be expected now?

thanks

PS

silver lining - whilst having to explore the inner depths of the footwell did notice the heater return hose had developed a small crack and was dripping !!

The best advice when buying new electrical components is avoid anything by Lucas that comes in a green box. You are better off buying old used items and renovating them.

The indicator cancelling facility relies on a clip on the steering column. If this is missing, they will not cancel.

As Tony says if the clip is missing they won't cancel but my experience if the repro indicator switches is that the sprung ears that catch on the clip are very poorly made and that won't help.
