Steering rack

Recommended Posts

BYO bump steer if you get it wrong.

The inner ball joint of the rack must be centred on a scribed line between the upper and lower suspension inner fulcrums - or it steers the car as the suspension goes up and down. Have a read of Frank Costin's book on race car chassis, suspension & steering design. (The other half of MarCos)

Once I drove a Marina pickup with a MGBGT V8 power unit fitted. The steering rack had been simply relocated so the engine/gearbox would fit. Great accelerating but frightening on bumps.

Revington has worked hard and got this issue sorted with their conversion kits.

PS the Lotus Elite steering rack is an Herald item with about 2" reduction of the inner rack bar length to get the inner ball joints in the correct place. - Simple Lotus cut and weld I suspect.
