Horn & Ignition switch

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Apologies for this question and the arrangement of my TR4 car horns.

My car has modern replacement car horns linked to a relay. All works fine except for when the car first starts up and there does not seem to be enough juice for the relay to operate. A blip on the accelerator and then it is OK for the journey.

My question is whether the horns should work without the ignition switch being on, and/or the engine running? If so I may need to look at the wiring set up.

Many thanks.

Mark

Hi Mark,

the horns should work through a relay but not the ignition switch.

Roger

TR4 horns didnt have a relay as that was only brought in with the 4a but regardless they should still be permanently live so you may have a poor earth by the sound of it

Thanks Stuart & Roger. I will have a nice little job to do then to confirm the wiring set up and check the earths. I have a feeling that the live for the relay may be wired to the back of the ignition switch and so I will take one from the battery.
