Hi Folks,

I've bought a Dash Cam NextBase 512) and have had a quick play with it.

The first thing I found was that the power cable is in the way, and very long.

I can sort the length. What have folk done to keep things tidy.

I have a plan.

The Dash Cam is at the top of the screen behind (in front of) the rear view mirror.

I will run the lead along the top of the screen, down the left hand side and back across under the glove box to the centre console.

I thought about having the cable (around the screen) inside some black 1/4" tube as that will not look so crumpled.

Any better ways of attaching/concealing the cable.

Roger

Roger,

What do you intend to use the video footage for?

If you want action movies then sighted behind your head (with roof down) so you can be seen manfully struggling with the wheel and gear lever as you meet the challenges of the road can be good.

If you want a get out of jail free card following an accident then windscreen, or behind / through radiator grill can be good.

MoT test requires all swept areas of screen to be clear of obstruction’s such as dash cams, so you could be pulled over by a bored PC if you replace it after testing.

Screen mounted is a pain with roof down as it needs to be removed when leaving the car parked. On a hot day rubber screen mounts release and the camera rolls off across the dash, possibly out of the car.

Each of my cars now has a camera fitted and it becomes such a chore to remove & replace that after a short time of use they are all now permanently mounted with the Auto on/off enabled. Fit & Forget.

Hi Andy,

had considered that for m CB a few years ago; but I chickened out of drilling holes.

Hi Alan,

it is for traffic accidents etc. When fitted behind the rear view mirror it will be sufficiently out of my eye sight/line.

I have one in the Volvo and with the rake on the screen etc then the cable has to do a long route out of the way but on a TR you should be able to get the cable to go in behind the screen rubber with a bit of care and a blunt screwdriver.

They are absolutely essential these days with numpties on the road.

Mine has the facility if the car is rocked by anything while parked it also records. With auto on off.

Stuart.

Hi Folks,

A WORD OF WARNING!!!!!!

I was sorting out the cable this morning and using Stuarts idea was placing it under the screen rubber.

Having done that I now had 2+ meters of cable to lose.

Simple idea - cut the plug off (cigar lighter type) and fit a new one.

This was easy enough. Plug in the unit and NOTHING. So plug in the original lead - NOTHING.

Check the wires are not crossed - RED to centre pin, Black to earth.

I then have a close look at the plug I removed ( hadn't used it because it had a moulded fitting for the cable) and it is not simply a plug - aaarrggghh.

It is 5V REGULATOR.

So I've stuck 12V into the 5V device - Dead.

I've contacted the manufacturer to see if anything can be done. But I don'r hold out too much hope.

It lasted a week - which is better than the windscreen

My fault.

It has not been a good couple of months.

Oh dear it will be toasted I bet.

Fairly normal to have a voltage regulator in the "Cigar" plug, these days it usually goes down to 5V which is the standard USB supply voltage.

Did the dashcam use the same connector for computer connection?

Oh dear Roger

Just to warn you that Vicky is planning a thread on the "silly things we have done" theme.........(I fear that your "incident" has spurred her on) ;) I am concerned about what she is going to recount!!

We'll need to increase the storage allocation to hold this thread.

Hi Neil,

I think the phrase is - 'don't cut corners', however I think 'cables' will do just as well.

What I should have done is cut a lump out of the cable and use the original plug - it has only two wires inside - Red & Black

What could possibly go wrong.

Hi Roger,

Would it be too much trouble to set up a web cam so we can see what's occurring?

You might have cornered the west london, james may reassembler vacancy?!
