Sill renewal

There arent any good ones, they are all pretty much the same and all require some degree of fettling to get to fit. Though the newer Moss end caps are very good.

You beat me Stuart.

I would say get in your Tardis, go back to 1975, buy a few dozen pairs of 85081 and 850282 from a StanPart dealer.... If you have a bit of space in the Tardis we could get a shoppping list sorted.....

PS It does seem odd that the later repros (post Cox and Buckles Kirksite/rubber press tooling product) are a worse fit and shape. Surely someone must be able to bang in sharper edges and a better shape or is it just too expensive and low volume sales for a product that fits all TR4-6 models to be re-tooled again.?

Peter,

In your opinion are the any of the repros going back to when the originals become NLA any better than others ? what about the earlier Cox and Bucks repro offerings ? prior to any Brown or Black panel offerings.

I have an unidentified pair ( I suspect C&B) finished in bare metal which appear to have what I think are deeper reliefs for the outer wing fitments

Mick,

C&B/Moss did not have any of their sill panels painted when I was there, the panels were received stored and sold in BIW condition (body in white or raw steel) The metal spec used was CR1 a deep drawing steel sheet, if a cheaper steel was used it would not press as crisply and pucker &/or tear - and as we know there is an inherent failure to get crisp edges with rubber press tooling anyway.

As I recall the panels were a little short between the wings, requiring a touch of filler to get a sharp edge sill to wing as orig. The depth of the recess area for the wings to fit over were good. The panels were by far the best at the time compared to the maroon or black painted & the zinc plated finish items. Zinc plated ones were also supplied to and by Unipart at one point but were only the bit between the wings, and over sill in fact. Some one even spot welded an hand made channel section at each end of the zinc over sills to make something that would fit under the wings.

Perhaps we should have collected a 'museum of horrors' to demonstrate the product that was offered to the ownership.

As an aside... Peter Buckles once had a lot of grief from a trade customer over the price of C&B carpet sets for TR range. The complaint was that they could get a 'factory made' set of carpets for a TR at 1/4 of the C&B. He ordered a set from the 'factory' items from the Exchange & Mart and discovered that you got what you paid for.

The 'factory made' set was a 5 piece collection made from material no better than flock sprayed foam rubber with less nap than a British Rail pork pie, No edging or binding/welting was done to finish the carpets.

The C&B set was an 11 piece set made from proper rot proof automobile carpet. All edging and binding/welting was done.

Pete kept the carpet set by the counter to demonstrate to customers that questioned the price when buying carpet sets in the future.

I have over the years bought up some old stock early repros and some have been better than others however on the whole they have all been streets ahead of the current offerings. I still tend to buy them if they turn up anywhere as they will save a lot of time in fitting and fettling.

Hi all

Would someone be so good as to post a couple of pics for of a 4A Sill, where it meets the A Post and Front Wing, and same at the B post, I want to make sure I understand the relationship between them. I realise all cars will be subtly different, so a good average will do. Also Door to Wing gapping has been discussed many times and 5 to 6mm spoken of, but can't find any reference to the Door bottom & Sill. Are we talking similar or a bit more? Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Ian
