Wiper stopped functioning

Recommended Posts

Erik,

It appears that things are getting confused because you have the wrong type of switch fitted to the car.

For operating a single speed wiper motor on a TR4, the switch should be a simple single pull on / off switch - Model PS7 - as shown below :

Let me know if you require anymore details or if you require a switch as I have a few spares.

Hi Richard,

this is the switch in my car: a single pull-push button.

But I think AlanT refers, both in text and in picture, to a 2-speed motor and switch. Which I do not have.

So, in my case, there is the green/black wire that needs to be switched, coming from the motor lug and that has to go to a lug on the switch.

Another cable on the switch needs to go to earth. When the switch is pulled, both are shorted and the motor should run.

My questions now are:

1. is it correct to assume that on a 1-speed motor only 2 wires go to this dashboard switch

2. how are these wires connected to this switch?

Thks!!

Erik

This is the switch wiring for a two-speed 75568 TR4A motor.

There will be 12V to the green wire on the motor. This comes from the wiring loom via the ignition switch.

This switch grounds the red and brown wire from the motor.

It's often pretty hard, on an old motor, to identify the wire colours. And of course they do get altered.

Hi AllanT, the colors on the wires are clearly visible in my case, no confusion there.

But I have a single speed motor and a corresponding single-pull-push dashboard switch.

Hi Erik,

You statement is correct, the switch has two connections.

The black / green wire from the wiper motor attaches to one side of the switch.

A single black wire from the loom is attached to the other side of the switch - this wire runs through the loom and connects with three other black cables which is then bolted to earth under the dash panel.

Great! Just this: I see on your photo that the switch has 3 lugs. So either this is a SPDT (single pole double throw) switch where one central pole connects to either the one or the other lug? Or one of the lugs is just open; or this third lug is connected permanently to another. Could you please elaborate on this.

A little background: I bougth this car last april in a private sale, the previous owner had barely driven it after having acquired it from a friend who had imported it from the USA where it had been fully restored (complete file with pictures, invoices, parts lists,.. etc). I had submitted it to a well known oldtimer specialist near Avignon for a review and checkup. His comment on the wiper issue: "Sir, the wiper motor is defective because there is 12V arriving on a terminal and it does not work" (....)..

Grts,

Erik

Edit: rewrote line 1, my grammar was confusing to read.

The switch has a double contact on one side and a single on the other. The double contact is for the green wire in as it allows another green to be fitted to the spare spade to run an accessory like a radio etc. The other single spade has the black (Earth) wire running to it.

Hà, great to know: there is a radio in the car but it is not connected.. Although, hearing the engine on the road is music in my ears :)

Hi Erik,

I would suggest you find another 'oldtimer' that knows TRiumphs and TR's.

Have you contacted the local TR car clubs in France. There may be knowledgeable members living near you.

Roger

Hi Roger, I had to think a few days about your reply. Sadly, I have to say that France is not a nation that knows how to combine crafstmanship, perseverance and mechanical engineering skills as the British do. They are a great country to enjoy life, wine, cheese and a very high level of "savoir vivre". But can you name one french vintage sportscar manufacturer that has lasted more then a decade? I can't, but I can name at least a dozen British that did; and did/do for several decades.

So I will not spend time searching for the holy grail of a "good vintage car garagist" here and rely on my and your knowledge and skill.

Have great end of year festivities!

Erik
