AndrewMAshton
Hello, bit bored at work so having a bit of fun, emailed 'Chloe' to say I was interested in the Jag, asked if I could look and if OK pay cash, only problem she is in Berlin and the car is in Inverness, big discount for quick sale but the strange thing is will only accept payment through paypal, must be a catch because I thought paypal was failsafe, Andrew
Alec Pringle
Paypal is reliable via pukka payment procedures - eg most ebay transactions, BUT NOT MOTORS !! Especially classified ads. Personal transactions through PayPal are another matter altogether, just as they are through any other payment system - there's a world of difference between dealing with a genuine business to consumer transaction and what is essentially a private sale. My brother-in-law is a mechanic just outside Inverness. He could go and look at it for you. I am sure 'Chloe' would be happy with that! Ask her for the address

Gary Flinn
Just checked eBay listing, it has been removed!….. About Time, I reported it yesterday?
Alec Pringle
Ebay receive shoals of reports, by no means all of them genuine . . . . . many reports are malicious, personal vendettas, people settling scores or grudges for example. Sorting the wheat from the chaff must be some task . . . . . Dubious listings are in any event usually allowed to run for a short time whilst being more closely investigated, any resulting contact or correspondence can result in clues enabling the offenders to be more effectively blacklisted for the future or, if we're really lucky, prosecuted. AndrewMAshton
Chloe's response 5 minutes ago!! Unfortunately I am working in Berlin at the moment for the next few months and Inverness is a bit to far to arrange viewing for each offer i get. I suggest going through eBay for your peace of mind. As for payment we will use PayPal - Pay After Delivery which gives you 14 days for the car to be delivered/inspected before any funds are released to me. Regarding delivery someone will collect the car and will transport it safely to your location. Please read (Pay after delivery) terms by clicking on the link below: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/pay-after-delivery-terms This purchase protection guarantees that the car is exactly as I described it; basically, once delivered, you'll have 5-7 days to inspect it and if you decide not to keep it you will get refunded in no time and they will charge me with the return costs. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the car in good order. Let me know if you want to go ahead as I still have quite a few more offers from potential buyers and looking for a quick sale. If you want to proceed please forward your full delivery details and will register this purchase via eBay / PayPal. Kind Regards, Chloe
Alec Pringle
Hi Andrew, all convincing stuff, except that wading through the small print of the PayPal 'Pay After Delivery' system will reveal that what is a perfectly reasonable principle for some types of purchase is not so appropriate to dealing with used car scammers . . . . . be they advertising on the 'bay, Gumtree, or any one of the umptynine used car platforms on the 'net. Caveat emptor rules OK ! Cheers Alec
AndrewMAshton
Getting desperate now!! Hi Andrew, How about https://www.pppay.com/help_centre.php?mo=escrow. I can apply for 5 days inspection period. Chloe
Alec Pringle
Never ever get involved with online escrow - of any description. Read the small print ! Cheers Alec

bookend69
Hi All Its a scam. I proceeded along the same purchase route two years ago. The car was offered for sale because her brother had died and left it to her. She was in Berlin, the car in Inverness. She offered the same deal. When checking with Paypal the night before I was due to make the payment, the foreign gentleman at Paypal said he thought it was all above board. I was still uneasy, so contacted Paypal again the following morning and spoke to a Geordie. He immediately suspected it was a scam and asked me to forward the emails. It was confirmed a scam shortly after. I contacted TRR and gave them the registration number. They put me in touch with the local club secretary, who in turn put me in touch with the owner. The "seller" had used the same advert as when he had purchased it. I think you can use the Paypal system to purchase cars, but there is a £10,000 limit. Its a while since I looked however as a couple of months after this "near miss" I purchased a very sound car through a local contact. Its been in the workshop being improved and having my "stamp" put on it for over a year, but will be ready for next spring. Cant wait!! Cheers Martyn
