Water Pumps (again?)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

The water pump on my 4 has decided to start leaking - lots of old threads on cavitation, uprated/standard etc.

What is the general view - get an uprated pump - or just stick to a regular one from a reputable source (TR Shop/Moss?)

- i don't have any overheating issues so the only problem i need to fix is the fact that the current one is in its death-throws.

Thanks in advance..... Andy

P.S. it has had a narrow-belt conversion at some point in the past if that makes any difference

Hi Andy,

if your present one works well then simply replace it with the same.

Compare the old and new on the counter of the shop.

The impellor needs to fit well into the body so that there is not too much gap behind the vanes.

Hi Andy

I replaced mine recently and bought a replica OEM (cast iron body) part from Moss. It does look almost identical but the impeller vanes are slightly smaller.

The part number is QHQCP170 and was then £33.44 plus vat. The part number prefix suggests Quinton Hazel but the box says Classic Gold (sounds like a radio station to me!) I can't see why you should have a problem with the narrow belt pulley.

Kevin

Andy

Water pump housing had corroded on LNK and under pressure a pin prick hole opened up (watch for spray pattern on underside of bonnet)

......so, bought a nice shiny alloy one with uprated 6 vane impeller etc etc. NO CHANGE IN TEMP GAUGE , bearing failed on that after 3 years.

Now back with a standard item, working fine. Stick with the original

Many thanks for the replies.... sounds as though there is not much need for the uprated version, i'll stick with Mr Triumph's original approach

much appreciated.

Thanks for the additional comments..... i'm in the UK and, as the GBP sinks, i don't think the US option would be great for me!

cheers, Andy

  • 1 month later...

Finally got round to replacing the pump... As mentioned, I opted for a std one, all back together and no more leaks, happy days - thanks again for the guidance.

Hi Andy

Pleased to hear it's all back together!

Difficult to tell in this cold snap, but keep us posted on the temp guage reading and if you think it varies from the old pump at all. I thought there was a light rise in temp on mine in hot weather after being changed.

Regards

Hi Kevin - will do, I didn't have time to take it for a good blast afterwards, but as you say it may have taken something special to get well up to temp in this weather!
