New TR4A chassis

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

I am considering the costs of restoring a 4A and would like to use a new CTM chassis. Their website is not particularly informative. Could someone give me an idea of what a new CTM chassis will cost please?

Thanks

Graham

Stuart,

They are currently closed and I am trying to work up a rough budget tonight.

Mike,

Do I infer from your comment that the cost is rather high?

Sure it's more like £4K from ctm.... Quality product though, you would not be disappointed

Depending on the finish its around 3.5K I have just taken delivery of a new one for a 6, its a no brainer not to use one if your doing a proper resto.

CTM is a normal retail supplier, with standard options and prices for a standard product, there is no reason that I can think of why their prices should not be discussed . . . . .

Cheers

Alec

Then let others state costs on here ?

Can show you the invoice I had for a 4a one late last year if your that interested?

Agree with Neil... it may have changed now but there was no fixed price then - it depended on your requirements and he'd make it. Only if he had a quiet moment (that's rare) would he produce one for the shelf as space is at a premium.

Give him a call. Colin is easy to talk to, very helpful and never pushy. If anything he was always mindful of avoiding spending my money where ever possible and so yes he'll give you a good price. And that's from someone who knows we wouldn't go anywhere else!

I think the price is there business and not on here

With something as important as a chassis I would say that £4000 is a reasonable price for a, as we know, quality item.

Hello Graham I think 4K is a good price and perfect for some but wave 4K in folded notes to the likes of Walter Petchy (quick he's packin up) TRbits,TRshop most of the specialists and they will come up with something ,iv had a TR2/3 one from California connection (google) just short of £2 500 with a wait of nearly 2 months but wow prep and paint job done best bit factory original. Martin.

Only thing with buying a s/hand chassis even a dry state one is its difficult to check that its dead straight before buying.

Stuart - If you do get a car you're interested in on a hoist, are there measurements you can easily do to determine this? I'm thinking the diagonal won't change much if it's twisted.

All the measurements are in the WSM but you can usually tell if you have a good eye also there is often tell tale ripples especially at the front each side behind the lower front inner wishbone mounts and looking from behind at the rear end where it kicks up behind the shock bridge. Obviously look for poor repairs where the trailing arm sections are and where they joint to the "T" shirt. If the car is sitting level on a ramp then a quick measure down to the ramp will give some indication and a measure between hub centres (Easier on wire wheeled cars)

Stuart.

Really? Not the most helpful of answers. The price of TR parts is our business!

Price is of interest to the buyer too and just because the vendor doesn't put their price on line here would seem as good a place as any to discuss how much it might be. Having a rough idea what others have paid may well help get the best price as big ticket items may well come with "options" that influence the price greatly and being able to say "Why is your price different from company B?" may well result in a sound answer or a discount.

Is it a new chassis or a rebuilt one? When I rebuilt mine I took it to a workshop in Brum and had mine rebuilt on the same jig by the same guy who supplied the exchange chassis sold by one of the major suppliers. As he said unless they have had a shunt they rust in the same places and he repairs the same sections. The price direct was a quarter of the dealer price! He is out of the TR game these days but knowledge kept several hundred Pounds in my bank account!

One of my many pet hates are people who advertise things without a price. As a potential buyer I resent wasting my valuable time ringing about an item to find the vendor is delusional. The same applies to eBay auctions that have a reserve price. Just start it at your minimum reserve price and don't waste my time.

Agree with you on items with a fixed specification, otherwise a "From" price may be more appropiate.

Re ebay, no. -- having a reserve gives the seller an idea what customers might bid up to and then he can always lower it if not met.
