More Supportive Seat Options

Recommended Posts

You're welcome Mark. I've only ever sat in a Ridgard once and it certainly was supportive. I'm not sure it would beat an MX5 Mk2 seat on a long trip though.

The Ridgard seats are very nice, supportive and comfortable for long journeys (I did the round britain run in a TR4 with Ridgard seats fitted and completed 2400 miles friday-sunday with no problems, even comfy enough to sleep in!!)

They are pricey but you get what you pay for....

Bob has a long lead time for the seats, he makes them to order so expect around 6 weeks for them to be delivered

If you search bucket seats on here you will find a few useful threads.

Some refer to badboy in Watford and trad' corbr..... as far cheaper options, but I haven't seen them in a car.

These are Ridgard "Rally" seats squeezed into a 3a.

Although not entirely relevant to you, but a comparison with the original seat in terms of style and volume. They are a material change away from originality.

They are on a standard moss 4a/5 tilting seat runner - but the PO did all the hard work for me by welding up the tubing to attach to the runners

I bought nearly new, so saved many hundreds off what I would have to pay. Also look at the Revington or in particular the Racetorations option. In my view the racetorations option is far more subtle, particularly if you are not going off-road.

Also, whereas I suspect that you will need to fabricate (welding and tubing bending) a base for the Ridgards, Daryll at Racetorations can supply ready to fit with base/runners etc. (No connection, just an impressed non-buyer!)

Mine are vinyl and look good, but if you have a 'hot ass' like SWMBO, I would advise leather if you can afford.

There was green 3a with beige leather seats and black TRS harnesses at the IWE last year - very nice.

Also, if yo go for Ridgards with the headrests, suggest you ask for at least 1" more padding on the front part of the headrest - they are too far back to use.

ps, don't buy seats that are too high, you wont get in the car gracefully with the roof on (its rear in and out for me and it aint pretty) but will be able to, indeed will have to steer with your thighs if you play in the front row !

Superb information thank you - the power of the forum.

I've just spoken to Bob and looks like the Rally seat is the one. I will take note of your comments thank you about head rest thickness.

So now does anyone want a pair of MKII MX5 seats??

Hi Mark,

I have leather Ridgards & they are very comfortable but try & get him to build with thickish leather. Mine via the previous owner appear a little thin in that department.

Cheers.

Mark, the Ridgards rally seats are very smart and may be ideal if you want comfort and security rather than original appearance. I have no idea of your stature but as you can see from Austin's pics the seat back angle is more raked than standard and the rear wheel arch limits seat travel to the extent that anyone over say 6' with proportional leg length will not be comfortable.

I have the Ridgard Rally seats. Having returned from the TR Irish Tour ( 1000 miles ), Mrs 4Mal pronounced them the most comfy seats of any car we have, or have ever had.
