Oil From Crankcase Breather

Recommended Posts

Hi Sage ones,

Did about 170 miles in the TR2 yesterday and then parked up in the garage as usual. Car went like a dream no problems. This morning I noticed a small amount of oil had dripped onto the garage floor directly under the breather and on further inspection I could wipe a drip off the end with a finger. Oil level is normal and it's not happened before. Should I book a sleepless night?

Regards, Pete

No. sounds fairly normal too me.

The oil fumes from the crankcase pass through the tube, & some will condense on the walls, & then drip down.

If you want a drip free car <_< then catch the oil in a small container, as required in racing circles.

Yes all done, 3° castor, -.6°camber, steering geometry kit fitted, & a copy of the steering box top mod fitted.

Car much nicer to drive, virtually no bump steer, & it now wants to go round corners !

We seemed to have hijacked this topic!

But I used the Revingtons steering geometry kit which improves the Ackerman angle.

The Bastuk adjustable upper fulcrum from the TR shop

Note that these come with bolts which are correct for a TR4 but wrong for a TR2-3A.

I bought the Revingtons sprung steering box cover, but when I saw it, I decided to modify my one, & sell off the Revington one to a friend at half price.

Finaly I fitted late TR4 trunnions, & second hand upper wishbones for late TR4-TR6 from the TR shop.

This gives the 3deg castor angle.

The camber was the trickyest part to set up, I ended up making a camber guage out of a spirit level, a straight edge, 2 rubber straps, & a slidable spacer (& some trigonometry)

The breather pipe on my 1958 TR3A dripped oil (Castrol 20W50) onto my garage floor soon after my neighbour re-built the engine with new pistons rings and liners. I had to add a litre of oil every 600 miles. About 90,000 miles and 14 years later, I decided to check it out. Everyone was talking about reducing pollution !

I stripped the engine and had the liners honed and I put in new rings. I now run with Castrol 10W30 and in 15,000 miles have never had to top up the oil level - nor have I seen any more dripping from the breather pipe.

I have to assume that when my neighbour re-built the engine in 1989, he didn't notice that the liners were not honed, therefore the rings, even though they were new, never bedded in properly.

Perhaps honing the liners and putting in new rings would help in your case.
