Wanted - TR4A Wooden Dash

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if anyone has a wood dashboard surplus to their requirements in top nick, which doesn't need anything doing to it and fits - I've heard some after market ones don't fit - are they just the wrong size, ie too tall or wide or the holes in the wrong place or what? What do I need to look out for?

Happy to pay fair price for the right one.

Also anyone had expierences, good or bad, with the after market wooden door caps which a number of suppliers do?

Thanks in anticipation

cheers

Rich

Hi Rich,

I can;t help you with a dash but I can confirm that they can be interesting to fit.

The dash I fitted in the 90's dropped straight into position.

I have a new dash (well it is an engine build after all) and it has taken two days to fit it.

The holes were full off lacquer so had to be drilled out - easy enough but why.

If I fitted the two outer screws first then the middle would sit out from the metal dash.

If I fitted the centre first screws first then the area around the air vents looked odd.

Also the indicator repeater and ig light were not happy.

After a number of trial fittings I decided to compare to the old dash.

Although it was close there were areas that needed a trim. After trimming I coated the exposed wood with boat varnish.

Eventually I got it to fit and it looks the dogs doo dahs.

The five fixing screw holes were actually quite well centred.

Buying anything is fraught with problems - I suppose that is TRiumph life.

Roger

PS - good deals - what me guv.

My original 4A dash was a bit tired and a few years ago I treated myself to a new burr oak one, together with matching door cappings, from Classical Dash of High Wycombe www.classical-dash.co.uk. The dash came with the glove box door already hinged in place, I just had to transfer my existing lock, finger pull and check link to the new door. Fitting was straightforward, all five fixing holes in the new dash lined up perfectly with the existing ones in the panel. When my car was built the indicator and ignition warning lights were not centrally located in their apertures in the dash, they actually looked crudely fitted and this grated for years. I have noted the same defect on other 4As. When I had the old dash off I used a rat tile file to re-shape the holes in the dash panel and hey presto the lights now sit perfectly central in the dash holes - Result.

The matching door cappings are a great improvement on the original PVC covered foam items and as a bonus they give and extra two inches or so of shoulder room which is handy in what is a narrow car.

i have a surplus RHD repro burr walnut dash. Its not perfect. See below.

I too found that I couldn't get it to fit because of the positioning of the Full beam/ign. lamp and after a lot of messing about gave up and re-lacquered the original.

The damage is where the steering column cut-out is. From memory the edge of the ply is rasped-off in order to try to get it to fit, and I think there is a hair line crack running from that for 2-3".

If anybody's interested I'll get the camera out and attempt to take some pickies.
