Wayne Scott Posted January 15, 2016 Report Share Posted January 15, 2016 Registration: LLX 705D A couple of members have seen an advert for the above TR4A, paid a deposit to someone but when it comes to go and pick it up in Scotland, it turns out to be a scam, the TR Register have been advised this morning of at least two people that have been caught. Edmond Posted January 23, 2016 Report Share Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) A member in England has contacted me this evening about a TR6 currently advertised on Ebay and apparently in Belfast Northern Ireland. Let me say I have no idea if it is a scam, and maybe it is a genuine bargain, but last year there was a similar year/colour TR6 advertised as located here in NI which definitely was a scam. For what its worth I cannot find the seller's name (as in the email) in the BT Northern Ireland phone book. Nor do I know anywhere in Northern Ireland where summer flowers are in blossom! Alec Pringle Posted January 25, 2016 Report Share Posted January 25, 2016 Unfortunately Tom, the Register website offers buyers no protection against dodgy sellers, nor yet does it protect sellers against dodgy buyers, not as far as I'm aware anyway . . . . . and innocent sellers are getting dubious offers from supposed would-be buyers trying to scam them. One thing you don't get on the 'bay is scam offers, not if you stick by the rules, and there is a significant element of protection for both buyer and seller covering the majority of transactions. Red 6 Posted February 15, 2016 Report Share Posted February 15, 2016 I would like to point out that some long standing contributors are also not members, and cannot post items for sale so have to use ebay and other outlets. But I digress, there appears to be a number of similar scams re cars for sale and the only ones who can spot them are marque enthusiasts who scan all for sale adverts and take the time to report them. I often wonder if any action is actually taken having reported several to ebay and PH in the past 6 months yet the adverts still appear for several days later. I have lost 2k as a deposit and agreement to pay the balance by cheque. The most helpful people were Lloyds bank and the least were the CAB though scams are not their bag.Needless to say the address he gave in Belfast was false, and the bank said that my money would have gone into a/c given but passed on to another very quickly. DXC 227L was sold at Brooklands last summer, and photographs of it have appeared as a scam advertisement on three occasions that I have noted since then. Caveat emptor, if it looks too cheap to be true then it probably is not true . . . . . if it's located somewhere relatively inaccessible, then that's probably an indication it's fishy . . . . and never ever part with funds until you have seen the car and the vendor. A marque club can be of great assistance here, it isn't difficult on this Forum for example to find recommendations to valuers and inspectors, or simply to find someone local who can go along a suss out a car and its seller. Banks fraud dept said there are no bailiffs in NI so thats that then. The car ticked all the right boxes and its only when he asked me send £4000 to save him using his savings on a quite separate deal that I pulled out. In future, please don't hesitate to ask for assistance here on Forum if you spot another car that potentially fits your needs - there will usually be someone willing to go out of their way to help a fellow enthusiast, and it can save a lot of time and mileage - even without considering the fraud element. They gave me an "Action Fraud " leaflet to fill in but it said there was no case...must have ticked the wrong box so will try again.You must keep an eye on many cars/transactions. B Am missing my TR3A which I gave to my eldest son....middle son got a Lotus Elan+2 and the TR6 was for the youngest...he will have to wait a bit longer. Jaguar Posted March 22, 2016 Report Share Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) I spoke to this guy about a TR6 for sale, his name was Thomas I said i would put a holding deposit down of £500 whilst i booked a flight to Scotland, he said this wasn't enough and that he wanted £2000 ! i straight away was suspicous, i aksed him if he had the Ap on his phone "Whatsapp' so that he could video the car live for me to look at to make sure it was in his possesion, he said "i dont know what that is" and that he did'nt know what Whatsapp was, i explained to him, but he wasn't interested. I then searched on Whatsapp, and sure enough there he was, with a picture of him standing beside his car, and old Vauxhall with an IRISH plate...i assume in Ireland. So, here we had, a Scotsman, in Ireland selling a car in Scotland that he was no where near to !! I immediately phoned him back to say i was going to report him to plod whereby he put the phone down straight away ! I then phoned the site where the car was advertised, Car and Classic, told them what had happened, and quite simply, they wern't interested !!!!!! they put simply said to me said, "fraud happens" !!!
