One side is about .5cm or a bit more closer to the front windscreen than the other. I can see it is not on square on the rear deck. As a result the hardtop doesn't fit properly, and the surrey top is a bit skewed. So I figure I will take off the backlight and see if it is slightly adjustable. Tom Fremont Posted October 6, 2015 Report Share Posted October 6, 2015 Hi Dave, 0.5 cm isn't much of a discrepancy; I've seen double that and more. You may also find that the windscreen cap and backlight curves don't line up either. There is usually enough slop in the roof mountings to accommodate these variances. In the case of all (3) alloy lids I've had the rear mountings were ripped out anyway so repairing these afforded an opportunity to fit the new holes to the cars. Its just that being not on straight means one side lines up properly but then the other side won't line up enough to get the bolt in at one end. I can widen the holes in the frame but I'd rather get it on straight. Hence, trying to see if there is any adjustment before I take the whole thing off. Tom Fremont Posted October 6, 2015 Report Share Posted October 6, 2015 Hi Dave, Have you tried to move the windscreen? This is the only adjustment facility provided. The practice of helping ourselves into / out of these cars by hanging on the top corner of the screen frame can bend it down over the years, affecting the distance to the backlight as well as the alignment with the side windows. Geko Posted October 6, 2015 Report Share Posted October 6, 2015 you need not widening the holes but rather slacken the windscreen bolts for tilt adjustment, then fit the hardtop then tighten the windscreen bolts. dpb Posted October 7, 2015 Author Report Share Posted October 7, 2015 Had a bit of a think. The backlight is definitely not on squarely. The windscreen and side window seem fine for gaps on the passenger side, but too upright on the driver side. (Counter-intuitive to using it as a lever to get out with). The driver side is where the gap between backlight and screen is too large. And the gaps between the side window and front and rear screens are also too large on the driver side. So, can I move the windscreen but only on one side? I suppose so with a bit of pushing and pulling. But I am left with a backlight still not on square. I reckon for the winter I will take the backlight off, make some small adjustments so it is square, then wriggle the windscreen a bit. In the meantime, arranging for a Manx vehicle test as I moved here last year. Pessimistically expecting all sorts of stuff to do. Dave ==== Quote Link to post Share on other sites
stuart Posted October 7, 2015 Report Share Posted October 7, 2015 There is a small amount of adjustment available for the Surrey rear section in the size of the holes in the rear deck, Basically though the front lip should match with the top forward edge of the "B£ post. There is a small amount of adjustment in the door window glass by shimming the door channels. Screens can be adjusted only very slightly front to back on each side at the base but the rake has more. Which one is that? My current one is coming off and is difficult to get sitting properly. Dave ===== There is also an amusing job getting the rubber seal to stay under the backlight. Tom Fremont Posted October 7, 2015 Report Share Posted October 7, 2015 I've done (3) with the stock seal ( TRF supplied anyway ) without issues. Its "H" cross section doesn't permit a view of the inner lip and whether it splays forward or backward but the outside lip looks fine on mine.
