AndyR100
Hi All, Considering replacement options for my 4 , are the 25% uprated lever arms really worth the huge premium over std items? (Based in the Moss catalogue) Any advice based on personal experience greatly appreciated Cheers, Andy
Graze
Andy I wanted stiff shocks on my 4 and went for the uprated ones as I intend o use it for track days. Happy with them but the ride is harder than standard. If you only drive your car at legal speeds on social days out I suspect the standard ones in good condition will be adequate Graze
Alec Pringle
Have your old ones reconditioned properly . . . . . . http://www.stevsonmotors.co.uk/Stevson%20Motors%20-%20Homepage.html Cheers Alec
AndyR100
Thanks for getting back to me, mine would be venturing to near the track, just regular road-use, so sounds like std is the best bet I hadn't considered getting mine reconditioned, will check that out. Thanks for the help..... Andy
Alec Pringle
Hi Andy, as with all 'upgraded' or 'uprated' items, you need a good reason to need them . . . . . no free lunches, an increase in ultimate roadholding, for example, has to be traded off against a significant loss of ride comfort. The original spec shocks work well, for normal driving, and Stevson are about the best around for reconditioning . . . . . bear in mind here that the OE Armstrong or Girling lever arm units were designed to be reconditioned. BlueTR3A-5EKT
A pair of Armstrong DAS9 'Firmaride' twin valve lever arms with TR arms fitted is probably the best you can do without seroius mods or the use of tube shocks. Reg Woodcock swore by them as the best for the weight and performance. Chassis mount reinforcing may well be needed though. Peter W
AndyR100
Just noticed my typo/auto-incorrection - my car won't be heading to a track. I'll stick with reconditioned std spec, Thanks for your advice..... Andy

Ade-TR4
I have a pair of these on my TR4 with standard rear leaf springs. The ride is very good at speed and much better controlled than with the standard shocks. I also use 165/80 profile tyres, which improves the ride too. Not cheap though... AndyR100
ouch, at that price even doing a local pick-up won't ease the pain..... i think i'll pass! ...... Andy Edited October 9, 2015 by AndyR100

AndrewMAshton
Hello, looking at TR4Tonys feedback he has already sold two pairs at £600 in the past few months! I always thought I had DAS9 (the single valve type) on my 4A but I note the ones Tony is flogging don't have the plate halfway along to engage the bump stops, are the arms interchangeable? I reverted to lever arms as I fitted CV driveshafts and wanted to restrict the vertical movement. I hade my lever arms refurbished by Stevsons (and uprated 15% at his suggestion) and apart from a leak and no quibble repair, no issues. Cheers, Andrew

Ray Hill
An other approach isn to fit teles - e.g.Spax. I'm in process of converting my live axle 4a to IRS and have a pair of Spax, done only arouns 3000 for sale as the fittings of the Spax for IRS are different. PM me if this is of interest

Tony is offering lever arms for 2-4 model.- Not TR4A-6 The Armstrong 8686 shock fitted to TR4A - 6 has a bigger body and bolt spacing compared to the TR2-4. Edmond
I replaced the original rear shocks on my 65 TR4a in 2008. These didn't fare too well to the point by this year the back end bounced up and down with very little provocation. I have now fitted the 25% uprated shocks and am delighted with them. The front and rear of the car feel more consistent and whilst firm it's far from uncomfortable. Hopefully they will last longer than the 2008 standard pair but who knows with replacement parts these days.
MichaelH
Thought I would throw in a variation all be it on my racing car This copies the original works cars and has the larger (as in 4A/5) DAS9 but the adjustable version (DAS10) it also shows a rear anti roll bar All the links are rose jointed So I have adjustable rear shocks and adjustable roll bar Michael
