Windscreen wiper rack problems

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

Just when I thought I had the car sorted the wipers started playing up. The left one is fine but the right one has become disconnected from the rack tubing so is trying to prise itself away from the deck. I have removed the steering wheel so as to get to a better upside down position in the drivers footwell. I removed the little hatch thing to get at the wheelbox. I took it apart and all seems OK and then tested the cable movement which is fine. After re-greasing the inside I went to re-assemble and realised that the tube from the p/s wheelbox is about 1/2" away from the right wheelbox backplate holding slot. This I believe was caused by it becoming loose and bending due to the flare pulling out. It refuses to be gripped by the backplate and I see Rimmer only has DIY cut your own and flair it yourself tubing which is no good as I have none of the right equipment for flaring.

Oh learned ones give me your wisdom and if possible the name of a supplier

Thanks

Charles

The part number I need is for the bit between the wheelboxes on a 1966 TR4A part no. 131151 in the Rimmer catalogue.

Can't help with the tube, but a tip is remove the speedo, for the drivers side, and glove box liner for the passenger side, and you can access the cover plates without risk to back, neck etc.

Hi Charles,

if you can't get a secondhand tube then the new Rimmers tube should be flare-able without special equipment.

Insert a rounded off small steel bar a short way into the tube and with the rod at about 30/45degrees rotate it against the side of the tube with a (bit of force)

It should flare.

TR wiper mechanisms are just this side of a joke compared to modern systems which can sweep oobleck off if they have to. TRIUMPH made their durability commensurate with the cars themselves, which as we know too well last for mid single digit years where rain is common. At least the wiper systems don't weigh much.

If anyone reading this has a working system, take it apart, clean it within an inch of its life and grease it likewise. Make sure the blades don't impact the windscreen seal on the downstroke as this will wreck the gears in the wheelboxes, replacement of which ranks at the bottom of operations for general frustration and discomfort.

And try to stay out of the rain ^_^ .

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks all,

Impatient as always I started ringing round and after I had drawn a blank at Rimmers (they have the DIY version that you have to flare yourself) , TR Shop and Moss then I rang TR Revington and Rob there said they were a 30 year old family business that did renovations and spares. He couldn't source a spare but for £7.50 +Vat their workshop would make one up for me and bring it to IWE at Malvern to save me £5 postage. I will let you guys know if it works out OK. I have delayed fitting the demister hoses etc until I have the wipers sorted. I already know how uncomfortable it is trying to get up behind the dash which is even more if you wear glasses like me. Removing the steering wheel also helps I found. Houdini with concert pianist fingers and the patience of a saint is needed. Thank goodness for internet radio in the garage at least I can listen to a decent 60s channel from California, rock on Elvis!

Cheers all (what a world wide club this is!)

Charles
