Very Bad Tyre Wear

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

a couple of months ago I mentioned about my front tyres wearing on the inside.

I put these tyres on the back and the rear tyres on the front.

Today I had a good look around the car for the coming MOT and noticed that the ex-front tyres now on the rear have worn much more and the

ex-rear tyres now on the front have worn considerably.

The tracking front and rear must be seriously out.

Monday I shall be sorting new tyres and getting the tracking etc sorted once and for all.

2550 miles around the Scottish Isles have taken their toll.

Dont forget the extra loading of full holiday kit wont have helped either, did you up the pressures to suit?

Stuart.

What can very rapidly wear out tyres, apart from what has been covered about misalignment,

and dragging them, is changing the direction of rotation.

In otherwords swopping them diagonally as opposed to front to rear on the same side.

My fronts wore badly when I had a couple of degrees of toe out by mistake.....

Correcting this transformed the cornering 'feel' and seems to have arrested wear.

Hi Stuart,

I think you are right about the holiday luggage. The rear tyres were not that bad before the TRip.

I will be getting new tyres tomorrow and organising a superduper wheel alignment.

I know the camber at the front is good, haven't a clue about the rear wheel.

Time to get a TR4, Roger, then you can forget about the troublesome rear end (the wheels will be upright, not doing their own thing in all directions) and the front suspension will remain connected to the chassis.

TR4: Simple - yes! Crude - yes! Strong - yes!

And quick!

Roger, worth checking the toe in. Yiu should have 1/16 th inch .... More = tyre wear as you describe.

Regards

Tony

Modern tyre places cannot cope with 1/16" toe-in, they work in degrees and minutes, so tell them you require toe-in of 20 minutes of arc.
