Ernest
Hi all I have a clunking noise when lifting clutch at standing start. I am thinking differential, any Ideas? If it was to be the differential would this be an expensive job? Thanks Ernest
TR 2100
Are we right to assume an IRS 4A? AlanR
TR4Geoff
Hi Ernest, Do you have Wire Wheels ? If so, it could be wear on the splines of the rear Hub Extensions/Wire Wheel Hubs. It rather depends what sort of "clunk"! Geoff
Ernest
Thanks very much for responses so far. It is a 4a IRS and it does have wire wheels. The clunking doesn't seem to come from the wheels and it feels as if 'slack' (wear?) is being taken up just as it moves off. Thanks Ernest
Peter Cobbold
If its dull 'thump' that has suddenly appeared, on a 6 I'd be looking at the o/s front diff chassis mounting come adrift. Or a fractured pressed steel plate that bolts the diff nose to that mounting. A worn diff pinion/crown wheel mesh can also clunk but its more metallic sound and doesnt in my experience come on suddenly. RogerH
Hi Ernest, first you need to look at the diff and see what may be hanging off. Then you have all the UJ's - 6 off - any of them could do it. Then there are wheels themselves - are they bolted on tight enough!!! Are the splined hubs bolted to hubs tightly. If the rear hub splines are worn - swap them with the front. Roger
ianc
If one of the joints on the prop. shaft starts to fall apart and sheds some of its roller bearings, you will get a clunk. Happened on my TR2 in the early 1960s. Ian Cornish
