Diff side shaft seals

Recommended Posts

Are these easy to change, or are they like the wheel hubs that your need a big puller or press with the possibility of distorting the flange getting it apart? No doubt a press may be a better option?

Are the new seals still leather ones or are they now the better rubber type material?

Ello John, the seals are rubber, but I think OE leather,ns can still be got.

as for splitt,n the thing, ye need a BIGG press

just did some and the gauge read 45tons when it went.

leave the nuts on, but loose,nd off a few threads, this to stop the thing going like a rocket

across the work shop when it breaks off the taper

never been able to tek em off with a puller either

And need a good suppport to stop the flange bending

prefferably 2 haifs, so it wraps aroond the shaft

I have done a few diffs just recently, the diff output shafts are doable with a puller but I got 6 tons on the press.

The talk of 45/50 tonnes is surely for the hub bearing?

Cheers

Graeme

The stub axle flange can be a pig to get off, the usual tapered interface. My local machine shop took mine apart using his small press and it went with a bang. It would not surprise me if you need a 50 ton press if they are really stuck on.
