Glass for a factory backlight frame (Hard Top)

Recommended Posts

Hi TR4/4A enthusiasts,

On a « Surrey » configuration on the detachable backlight Hard Top part, a TR4 A irs enthusiast in France is struggling to find a “Backlight glass” suitable for a “Factory detachable backlight frame, Alloy”. The one from Moss designed to match the frame in GRP is not fitting the factory frame.

Any advices, to address the issue and source the right part?

Best regards

Hi Marc,

I fitted my rear surrey frame glass a couple of weeks ago.

If you try to fit it like the front screen - fitting lower lip first - it will appear to be too wide at the bottom forward corners - do not try to bend the glass.

I ended up inserting the TOP lip first, then allowed the two vertical sides to slip in , then teased the lower lip in.

This done with the aid of string in the rubber groove.

Hi Tom/stiggy/ and Roger/RogerH,

Thanks' for this 1st two feedback and advise.

It is bizarre, the issue is the 3D size & shape of the glass slightly offset from Moss (via Moss Motor Dream Paris)!

On another side, I am certain about the backlight frame, it is an original factory frame/ Alloy. I saw a part number on the moulded part/casting n°804399

Is someone know if the Factory/Alu and Remanufactured/GRP have the exact same 3D shape?

Sorry for my English, I maybe not clear.

Regards

Marc the original glass was toughened and the new repros are laminated. This means that an original glass can bend slightly to conform with any anomolies of the frame but the new repros wont bend at all and will crack. The repros are a dead copy of the originals and will fit the hole. I would check the frame to make sure that it is exactly correct in its shape. The only difference between the original frame and a repro fibreglass one is the depth of the lip around the window area as the fibre ones are designed to take a smaller perspex window. You do need to use the Moss rubber as well. It is 4" longer than the window area but this is so that it will fit all the way down into the corners. When fitting the rubber to the glass first of all then have the excess rubber down in each corner.

Stuart.
