TR4A1965
Hi all. This maybe a worn out topic but I am looking at electronic ignition systems and wondered if there is a consensus on the best for a TR4A? Any thoughts welcome. My TR4A build is coming on great and there are a few updates here if you'd like to see them. http://tr4a.weebly.com Many thanks and best wishes. Paul
ianc
I have been running with Newtronic Piranha for 22 years. Fit and forget. Ian Cornish
TriumphV8
As I can see you lost the world of fully stock engines and from that a programmable ignition is the best choice. Besides the MegaSquirt and Megajolt which offer not reached possibilities in setup but with a somewhat more effort to install first my recommendation is the 123ignition or 123tune where I prefer the 123tune. Just fitted both the 123 ignition and tune and it is easy to do. Start always with a proper setup of TDC and marking the pulley! The more expensive 123tune was just sold at German TR Register new for 330 Euro what is somewhat 260GBP and a bargain.
peejay4A
I very much doubt you'll get a consensus Paul. I've used Pertronix in the past and here's what Eric has now. Cheap enough to carry a spare. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-TR4-A-AccuSpark-Electronic-ignition-conversion-for-Lucas-25D-/390368629417?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5ae3c892a9
MRG1965
Hi, I fitted a stealth unit for £30, replaces the points without any external stuff outside distributor, works very well, ran much better then on points when I fitted. Not the expenive choice most people seem to prefer, but I'm happy. Think we tend to pay too much for parts anyway, jusy my opinion. TR4 25D4 distributor. Mark
TR4A1965
Thanks all. Looking at 123Tune it seems very impressive. There is a video here if you can stand the music:-) Great the way you can hook it up to your laptop and tune it etc! Not cheap though at £350 (Rimmer Brothers)! Fireman049
I've got the 123 distributors fitted to both my TR3A and 'E'-type Jaguar and am very pleased with them. Tom.
Lebro
If you just want an electronic replacement for the points I would recommend an Accuspark module. all fits within the standard distributer. & if you don't trust it 100% then just buy 2, & carry the 2nd as a spare. Much easier to change than points. Bob. Edited March 22, 2015 by Lebro
Rob Salisbury
An Accuspark unit plus their distributor is working well on my TR4A, though I'm suspicious that the spring behind the centre electrode in the distributor cap is a bit weak ... the engine goes "off" a bit after running for several hours, a little tweak of the electrode brings back full power, I'll try an original cap next. So for little money you can have electronic ignition plus a new distributor to boot, though it may not last as long as a real Lucas one, also, with the "Black Box", programmable ignition can be added at a later date. Just back from the annual 1500mile Alpine ski dash, no ignition problems, though I did carry a spare accuspark unit just in case!! Cheers Rob

Agreed the 123 is a good option but that is a slightly unfair demo there as they are obviously using knackered distributors anyway. Interesting to note the timing is slightly better with points than the Pertronixs one. Stuart.
Paul Harvey
Paul, As you clearly enjoy spending money on your toy, you will love the 123 Tune. Completely programmable, without getting your hands dirty. Connect laptop and away you go.
Paul Harvey
PS. If you are still considering tyre options, have a look at BLOCKLEY TYRES. Their new 'v' rated 15" radials are probably an option we should all be considering. Genuinely manufactured by them, and available only from them or from MWS, which is great endorsement in its own right.
ianc
The small, spring-loaded, graphite rod in the top centre of the distributor cap is a "service item" because it wears away. A few years ago, I had this rod wear to almost nothing, so it only just made contact with the rotor arm. Contact Martin Jay (Distributor Doctor) for replacements. Incidentally, the dust produced from the wearing of the rod gets deposited inside the cap and, graphite being carbon and a conductor of electricity (of course, that's why it's there) can cause shorting of the HT to earth if allowed to accumulate. So, whenever the cap is removed, wipe the inside of the cap and the metal parts beneath with some kitchen roll. Ian Cornish

Paul Harvey
Steve, You could call Peter Burgess (rolling road) on 01773 520021 - he had some in stock last year Make sure they are the 'Tune' version which is infinitely programmable Might need to ask for a 'price match' because £260 is a lot less than I paid from SC parts

Just wondering if I fitted the "Black Box" what improvements I could expect. Forgive my ignorance on the more technical aspects of ignition Chris
