My 1962 TR4 has domed glass instruments but apparently no instrument lights other than for the speedo and rev counter! I have only looked at the oil pressure gauge so far but can't feel any cables to other gauges.

Firstly, is this correct?

Secondly, I am planning on lighting all instruments with LED - MES lights, is it simply a case of drilling the back of the gauge casings to take claw type bulb holders. Has anyone done this?

My 65 TR4 has lighting to all instruments. I would be surprised if yours never had any lights. I tried LED to the smaller gauges but couldn't get them working - perhaps not enough power. They do work in my TR6.

Autosparks can do a small loom for the instrument lights. It takes wedge base bulbs and I have LEDs in mine. They work fine.

Hi I used the 100degree mes led bulbs, work fine on my 64 tr4 small gauges. Mine have the standard push in tubes on the back of the gauges that hold the buld holders.

John,

The domed glass gauges fitted to early TR4s do NOT

have individual lights.

They follow the TR3 style of a ring of clear plastic just

inside the chrome ring and are side-lit through this by

a pair of bulbs fitted to the dashboard.

Trust your overdrive is behaving itself?

Maybe. (if you mean my post)

Just waiting for Stuart to correct me.

That's precisely what I meant Alan. I had a '64 TR4 with domed instruments in 1973 but I didn't do an iota of work on it so never got to understand niceties like this.

You are correct Alan, I believe they changed them when the later flat glass instruments came in.

Stuart.
