Just drained the old black stuff out, left to drip all out, it has taken a virtually a full litre to fill to the hole - is that enough (castrol chart says 1 pint???) Or do i need to rotate wheels and will it the take more ?

Fill it until it starts to run back out of the filler plug hole. That is the level. No need to rotate anything.

Rob has stated the recognised way of judging that is full.

If you are related to Thomas you could stick a little finger in to see how close to the top of the hole the oil is.

It may seem obvious, but the car does need to be sitting level, preferably on its wheels and then fill until it starts to overflow. Easy to overfill and ruin your oil seals and brake linings.

I prefer to keep the oil level slightly down using littlejim's method. Centrifugal force is the main reason the outer oil seals fail on Girling diffs. Lockheed seals just fail because the diff assemblies were engineered for staid Mayflowers.

Cornering a standard trim Mayflower at TR speeds would be alarming to say the least.

Castrol chart is wrong. TR3A owner's manual says the rear axle capacity is 1.5 imperial pints of EP gear oil.

Check that the diff breather on the top RH side is operational.

0.85 litres is equal to 1.5 pints..
